Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Veligandu Maldives Resort Island?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu Maldives Resort Island is located in North Ari Atoll on Rasdhoo Atoll. The primary transfer is a 20-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport — the most direct option. The seaplane operates daily from approximately 09:00 to 15:00; guests arriving outside these hours require alternative arrangements. An alternative lower-cost option exists: a public or scheduled speedboat from Male to Rasdhoo local island (approximately 60 minutes) followed by a short transfer to the resort. A private speedboat from Male is also available (approximately 60 minutes). Veligandu also operates scheduled speedboat departures between the airport and the resort at 10:30 and 16:45 (airport to Veligandu) and 07:00 and 15:30 (Veligandu to airport). Guests who miss these times can overnight at Champa Central Hotel in Male. Flight details and full names and ages of all travellers must be provided at least 7 days before arrival. A Crown & Champa Resorts airport representative meets guests at Terminal 1 Arrival Hall exit holding resort signage. Tip: Provide flight details and traveller names and ages to the resort at least 7 days before arrival — this is a specifically required lead time at Veligandu, longer than at many other resorts. Plan the international arrival to land before 13:00 Male time for a comfortable same-day seaplane connection. If arriving later, the 16:45 scheduled speedboat allows a same-day transfer regardless of seaplane availability.

Question 2

What is the 2024 renovation and how has the resort changed?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu Maldives Resort Island completed an 18-month renovation programme and reopened in November 2024 as a 5-star luxury property, joining the Crown and Champa Luxury Collection. The resort was previously a 4-star property and also previously operated as adults-only from 2016. Following the November 2024 reopening, children of all ages are welcome, though the resort has no dedicated kids club and limited family facilities. The renovation modernised all 100 villas across 7 categories, added a new infinity-edged swimming pool and repositioned the resort's food and beverage programme significantly. A new resort app allows dining reservations, activity bookings and personalised service access. The iconic sandbank at the southern tip of the island, the celebrated house reef and the overwater Himeyn Spa all remain defining features. The resort has been nominated for the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2026 in the best Beaches category. Tip: Read post-November 2024 accounts specifically — the renovation means pre-2024 accounts reflect a meaningfully different product and price point. The Crown and Champa Luxury Collection repositioning represents the most significant change in the resort's history and the 5-star standard introduced by the renovation is best assessed through accounts from late 2024 and 2025.

Question 3

What are the meal plans available?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu operates on a Bed and Breakfast basis with the option to upgrade to Half Board, Full Board or All-Inclusive Plus. The All-Inclusive Plus package covers meals, beverages and selected activities and is available as an upgrade from the base bed and breakfast rate. . Madivaru is the à la carte seafood and grill restaurant. The All-Inclusive Plus package covers the buffet and selected outlets — confirm exact scope at booking as a la carte at Madivaru may carry a supplement. Tip: Confirm the exact scope of the All-Inclusive Plus package at booking — specifically whether Madivaru à la carte is included or carries a supplement, and which beverages are covered. The plan terminology changed post-renovation and the current scope is best confirmed directly with the resort before booking.

Question 4

What is the house reef and what marine life can guests encounter?

Accepted Answer

The house reef at Veligandu is one of its most celebrated features and a primary reason the resort has earned its romantic reputation. The sandbank at the southern tip of the island — after which the resort is named (veligandu means sandbank in Maldivian) — marks where the best snorkelling on the house reef is found. Beach villas on the eastern end and northern end allow guests to step directly into the water and onto the reef. Hammerhead sharks are encountered throughout the year and are a specific Veligandu distinction — one of very few North Ari Atoll resorts to reliably produce hammerhead sightings. Grey reef sharks are particularly common in February. Turtles and eagle rays are often spotted on the south side of the island cruising the house reef. Manta rays are best December to May. 20 dive sites are accessible both from the reef and by boat. Nitrox is available at the Ocean Pro dive centre (PADI affiliated). Tip: Ask the Ocean Pro dive centre specifically about hammerhead shark scheduling — hammerhead encounters are the most distinctive marine differentiator at Veligandu and the dive team knows which sites and timing produce the most reliable sightings. Grey reef sharks are particularly common in February and manta ray encounters are best December to May — plan the visit timing accordingly.

Question 5

What are the 100 villas and 7 categories?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu has 100 villas across 7 categories post-renovation. Beach Villas are positioned on the eastern end facing sunrise and the northern end for sunset glow — partially open-air bathrooms with private deck and sun loungers, just steps from the beach. Jacuzzi Beach Villas have a private jacuzzi deck with sun loungers and lush tropical plant fences for privacy. Garden Jacuzzi Villas are set in the tropical garden interior with private entrances and complete privacy. Ocean Villas are overwater on the north-east corner — unparalleled luxury perched on stilts with panoramic views, a private bathroom with bathtub and shower, a spacious deck with a 6.5 x 3 metre infinity pool and a broad staircase giving direct house reef access. Sunset Ocean Villas are overwater facing sunset. Ocean Pool Villas are the newest category with a private pool directly over the water. Two-Bedroom Ocean Pool Villas accommodate families or groups. All villas provide a king-size bed, private porch and 55- or 65-inch flat-screen TV. Tip: Book an Ocean Villa or Sunset Ocean Villa for the most direct and productive house reef access — the broad staircase giving direct reef entry is the most specifically praised practical villa feature, producing daily marine encounters with turtles, rays and reef sharks without any boat logistics. Age restrictions apply: Jacuzzi Beach Villa, Water Villa, Jacuzzi Water Villa and Sunset Jacuzzi Water Villa are for guests aged 12 and above.

Question 6

What is the age policy post-renovation?

Accepted Answer

Following the November 2024 reopening, Veligandu accepts children of all ages in the Beach Villa category. For Jacuzzi Beach Villas, Water Villas, Jacuzzi Water Villas and Sunset Jacuzzi Water Villas, only guests aged 12 years and above are accommodated. Children under 2 eat free based on the meal plan rules when accompanied by an adult. The resort has no dedicated kids club or family activity programme — there are no structured children's activities, making it most suited for adults and older children who do not require organised child entertainment. The pre-2024 adults-only policy no longer applies following the renovation, but the absence of a kids club means the resort retains an adult-oriented atmosphere in practice. Tip: Book Beach Villa category for families with children under 12 — all other villa categories at Veligandu have a minimum age of 12. Confirm the minimum age restriction for the specific villa category at booking as the age policy post-renovation differs from the previous adults-only blanket policy and the restrictions vary by villa type.

Question 7

What are the activities and water sports available?

Accepted Answer

Marine: Ocean Pro PADI-affiliated dive centre (20 dive sites, nitrox, hammerhead sharks year-round, manta rays December-May, grey reef sharks February), house reef snorkelling from Beach Villa steps and the southern sandbank, guided snorkel excursions, dolphin watching. Water sports: jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and wing-surfing, wakeboarding, water skiing, Seabob rides and electric jet surfboard. Wellness: overwater Himeyn Spa with extensive treatment programme, yoga pavilion. Land: infinity-edged swimming pool, fitness centre, beach volleyball, games room. The football field is noted as a social hub for both staff and guests — staff football tournaments are specifically praised as creating a genuine community atmosphere. Tip: Book the hammerhead shark dive on arrival day through Ocean Pro — this is the single most distinctive marine activity at Veligandu and the dive team can advise on current conditions and best timing. Book the Himeyn Spa for mid-stay rather than the first or last day — the overwater spa experience works best when the stay's relaxation has fully settled.

Question 8

What is the iconic sandbank and island identity?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu means sandbank in Maldivian — the resort is named after its most celebrated natural feature. The sandbank at the southern tip of the island is a wide, pristine stretch of powder-white sand where two beach lines meet, flanked by sun loungers with straw umbrellas and hammocks. The sandbank is also where the best snorkelling on the house reef is located. In 2021 Veligandu Island won the title of World's Best Beach. The island is 600 metres long by 150 metres wide — approximately 22 acres. The seaplane terminal lounge is described as a notable and distinctive feature — guests are escorted there from the international terminal and can relax, have a snack with juice or hot drinks, and watch TV while waiting for seaplane boarding. Herons are commonly spotted throughout the island, including at the pool, adding to the natural wildlife character. Tip: Walk to the southern sandbank at sunrise for the most atmospherically compelling start to the day — the combination of the sandbank's white sand, the converging beach lines and the early morning calm produces the most photogenic and peaceful daily ritual available. The adjacent house reef entry from the sandbank is also the most productive snorkelling access point.

Question 9

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Veligandu has a long and well-established honeymoon identity. Couples rate the location 9.8 out of 10 for a two-person trip. The Jacuzzi Water Villas and Sunset Ocean Pool Villas are the most specifically praised honeymoon accommodations — the private jacuzzi deck or infinity pool with sunset views produces the most romantically cited villa experience. The tropical fruits basket and champagne are provided on arrival for honeymoon package bookings. The sandbank at sunset, the hammerhead shark dive and the Himeyn Spa treatment together form the most praised honeymoon circuit. Adam, Nadeem and Julia are specifically named as staff who contributed to wonderful experiences. The resort is described across many accounts as the definition of paradise and as perfect for a honeymoon. Tip: Book the Jacuzzi Water Villa or Sunset Ocean Pool Villa for honeymoons — the private jacuzzi deck on the Jacuzzi Water Villa is specifically praised as producing the most romantic daily ritual at Veligandu, with the ability to watch sunsets while soaking with champagne and tropical fruits. Notify the resort of the honeymoon at booking for the honeymoon package welcome arrangement.

Question 10

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

North Ari Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best visibility. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain, stronger winds and lower rates. Manta rays are best encountered December to May. Grey reef sharks are particularly common in February. Hammerhead sharks are encountered throughout the year and are not seasonal. The seaplane operates 09:00 to 15:00 — late international arrivals can use the 16:45 scheduled speedboat for same-day arrival. Veligandu was nominated for Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2026 in the best Beaches category. Tip: Visit December to May for the combination of dry season sunshine and peak manta ray season — the most complete marine wildlife experience at Veligandu comes from combining clear-water visibility with active manta ray and hammerhead shark encounters. February specifically for grey reef sharks and manta activity together produces the strongest single month.

Question 11

How does Veligandu compare to other North Ari Atoll resorts?

Accepted Answer

North Ari Atoll has Safari Island Resort, Sandies Bathala, Constance Halaveli and Kuramathi among its resorts. Veligandu (100 villas, North Ari Atoll/Rasdhoo Atoll, 20-minute seaplane, 5-star post-2024 renovation, Crown and Champa Luxury Collection, hammerhead sharks, iconic sandbank, World's Best Beach 2021, 20 dive sites, no kids club) is the most recently renovated and most award-recognised romance resort in the Rasdhoo area. Compared to Safari Island Resort (84 villas, 4-star, strong house reef, Safari Boat, Joy Diving), Veligandu is 5-star post-renovation with larger villas and more upscale dining. Compared to Sandies Bathala (73 villas, Werner Lau diving, house reef surrounding the entire island), Veligandu has the hammerhead advantage and the sandbank but Sandies Bathala has a stronger house reef wrapping the full island. Tip: If choosing between Veligandu and Sandies Bathala in North Ari Atoll: Veligandu wins on the 5-star luxury renovation, the hammerhead shark access, the iconic sandbank and the World's Best Beach recognition. Sandies Bathala wins on the house reef surrounding the entire island, the Werner Lau diving heritage and the more affordable price point for comparable marine encounters.
