Question 1

How do I get from the airport to The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah?

Accepted Answer

The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah is located on Dhigurah Island in Gaafu Alifu Atoll — one of the more remote luxury resorts in the Maldives. Two transfer options are available. Option 1 (most common): a 55-minute domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Kooddoo Airport, followed by a 7-10 minute speedboat to the resort. Option 2: a 90-minute seaplane directly from Male. The resort's staff meets guests at Male airport and escorts them to the lounge where complimentary drinks and snacks are provided during the domestic flight wait. One praises this as seamless — from Male to the resort with every detail handled. However, transfer waiting times can exceed 4 hours due to domestic flight schedules — one those who had been on a long flight from London to Male describes this as a very long time. Upon arrival at Kooddoo, more staff welcome guests and escort them to the speedboat for the final 7-10 minute crossing. On arrival at the island, guests receive coconut welcome drinks and are taken by golf cart to the lounge for check-in. Tip: Build the domestic flight wait into the arrival day plan — one describes waiting over 4 hours for the domestic flight after a long international journey from London to Male. Pack snacks and entertainment for the wait. The resort lounge at Male airport provides complimentary drinks and food which helps, but the total journey time can be half a day depending on flight connections.

Question 2

What is the two-island concept and how does access to the sister property work?

Accepted Answer

The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah opened in 2019 and is connected to its sister property, The Residence Maldives at Falhumaafushi (opened 2012), via a 1-kilometre bridge — described as the longest private bridge in the Maldives and a great selfie spot. Guests staying at either property have full access to all nine restaurants and six bars across both islands. This means guests at Dhigurah can dine at Falhumaafushi's restaurants and vice versa. The bridge can be crossed by bicycle (two complimentary bicycles per villa), buggy or on foot. Dhigurah is the bigger and busier island with more restaurants, better suited for families and guests wanting more space. Falhumaafushi is more intimate and compact, with the kids club located on Dhigurah. One those who stayed on Dhigurah specifically praises having a second house reef via the sister island. Tip: Choose Dhigurah over Falhumaafushi if you have older children or want more space and more restaurant variety — who chose Dhigurah for these reasons describes it as the right decision. Families with young children who prioritise compact layout (shorter distances between pool, beach and buffet) may find Falhumaafushi more practical, though the kids club is on Dhigurah.

Question 3

What is the house reef like and what do guests encounter?

Accepted Answer

The house reef at The Residence Dhigurah is the most praised feature. snorkelling and calling it some of the best diving and snorkelling they had done — blacktips, turtles, corals, rays and dolphins. Another describes the house reef as exceptional and close to the beach. A those who snorkelled from their sunset water villa describes it as better than the house reef located on the bridge. At around 7pm each day, with a torch outside the front of the villa, many turtles and stingrays are visible in the shallow water — a specific and repeatedly praised evening wildlife ritual. Leopard sharks, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, eagle rays and countless turtles have all been encountered. The reef at Dhigurah accessible from the dive jetty is easier to access than some villa positions. One important note: an all-island side has calmer conditions and one side has stronger currents — the strongest current side requires a challenging swim to reach the reef drop-off. Manta rays and baby sharks are visible from the lagoon villa and overwater villa terraces. Tip: Ask the dive centre team on arrival which side of the island has the calmer reef access given current conditions — one those who is a competent swimmer found the swim to the reef drop-off against the current difficult, while the Dhigurah dive jetty entry is easier and equally rewarding. Visit the area outside the villa at 7pm with a torch for the turtle and stingray evening encounter.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

173 beach, lagoon and water villas across both islands, every single one with a private pool. Villa categories include: Beach Villa (150 sqm minimum with ocean access and private pool), Water Villa with Pool (sunrise and sunset orientations, direct ladder into the sea), Lagoon Villa, 2-Bedroom Villas, and larger family configurations. All villas are spacious and luxuriously designed using natural materials with local artefacts. Room 337 (water villa with pool at Falhumaafushi) is notable as a wonderful position. The 2-bedroom over-water villa with pool is praised7-night stay. The sunset side villas are praised. Beach villas on the sunset side are separately praised for direct beach access. Water levels below water villas can be low at low tide — notes this as a practical consideration. Avoid beach villas 205-206 at Dhigurah which are opposite the generators and can be noisy and smelly. Tip: Request a sunset side villa orientation at booking — one states they were glad they chose the sunset villa for all-day sun and full-day pool use. Avoid beach villas 205-206 specifically as these are opposite the generators. Water levels below water villas can be shallow at low tide — this is characteristic of the lagoon position and should be expected rather than being a surprise.

Accepted Answer

The resort has nine restaurants and six bars across both islands. Li Bai is the signature Cantonese restaurant — Li Bai specifically with gratitude to Libie the restaurant. The Dining Room is the all-day beachfront dining. Café del Sol at The Beach Club serves Mediterranean tapas. Fish is the seafood restaurant. Long Island and other venues complete the programme. Shafeeq (from Bangladesh) is praised for recommending a curry described as the best had — shout out to the chefs. a curry as the best they had ever had at a resort. The all-inclusive option is good value given the cost of extras. However, notes that during low occupancy only a la carte menus were available rather than an evening buffet — some guests prefer to have the choice of a buffet. Tip: Explore the restaurants on the sister island Falhumaafushi as well as those on Dhigurah — the full nine-restaurant, six-bar programme across both islands is the key distinctive advantage, and those who only use one island's dining miss half the programme. Ask Shafeeq (from Bangladesh) to recommend a curry specifically — his recommendation as the best curry they ever had.

Question 8

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

Gaafu Alifu Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best visibility for the house reef. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds, lower rates and fewer guests. had a mostly excellent 2-week August stay with 12 days of sunshine despite high winds on some days. The remoteness of Gaafu Alifu Atoll means the reef is pristine and less visited year-round regardless of season. The domestic flight wait at Male airport does not vary meaningfully by season. Fly issue can be more prevalent in wet season — pack personal fly repellent. Tip: Pack personal fly repellent regardless of season but especially for al fresco dining — the resort fogs the island and provides repellent and candles, but the equatorial location means flies are a consistent presence during outdoor dining and personal repellent provides the most direct protection.
