Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Fihalhohi Island Resort?

Accepted Answer

Fihalhohi Island Resort is located on Fihalhohi Island in South Male Atoll, 28 km from Velana International Airport on the south-western rim of the atoll. The transfer is a 40-45 minute speedboat. A mandatory transfer is arranged by the resort. The resort arranges the transfer — guests provide flight details in advance. The island is at the far south-western end of the atoll, which produces a scenic transfer across open atoll waters. Tip: The south-western position of Fihalhohi produces a slightly longer speedboat crossing than some South Male Atoll resorts — the 45 minutes includes open-water sections that can be choppy in windy conditions. Motion sickness medication is advisable for guests susceptible to sea movement.

Question 2

Is there a house reef and how accessible is it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The house reef is one of the island's strongest features and is accessible directly from the beach without a boat trip. The reef runs along approximately two-thirds of the island perimeter and is within swimming distance from most accommodation positions. Marine life encountered includes blacktip reef sharks, turtles, manta rays (September to December peak), nurse sharks, eagle rays, moray eels and dense schools of tropical fish. The reef is consistently described as healthy and alive with marine fauna. note they can observe sharks and other fish from the Water Villa decks without entering the water. World-class dive sites around the neighbouring islands of Guraidhoo, Kandooma and Cocoa are accessible by dhoni and are among the most famous in South Male Atoll. Tip: Enter the reef from the beach at a point away from the Water Villa jetty area to avoid foot traffic — the section of reef to the north of the main beach, accessible from the shore near the Beach Rooms, consistently produces the most abundant wildlife encounters on a self-guided snorkel.

Question 3

What do guests most frequently say about the Beach Rooms versus the Water Villas?

Accepted Answer

Fihalhohi has 150 rooms across two main configurations. Beach Rooms (138 units) include multiple sub-categories: Deluxe Beach Rooms with direct beach access and tropical surroundings; Deluxe Sky Rooms on the upper floor of duplex buildings with private balconies and panoramic beach views; Premium Beach Rooms on the northern beach with ocean views and a beachfront terrace; and Deluxe Superior Rooms within lush greenery with easy beach access. Guests in Deluxe Beach Rooms specifically praise the wide shaded verandas framed by palms, the sound of the surf at night and the direct sand access. Sky Room guests on the upper floor value the elevated privacy and the treetop-level view from the balcony. Water Villas (12 units) are the most-praised single category: overwater with large wooden decks in three sections, a four-poster bed, direct lagoon access via stairs and the ability to see reef sharks swimming below from the deck. The Water Villa is the category guests most specifically request for return visits, consistently describing the lagoon-watching from the deck and the staircase reef access as the defining daily experience. Tip: Request a Water Villa as early as possible — with only 12 units they are the most limited and most-requested category at Fihalhohi. The deck with three separate sections, the four-poster bed and the direct access to the lagoon and reef make these villas the standout experience of any stay.

Question 4

What meal plans are available and how is the food?

Accepted Answer

Multiple meal plan options are available. The main Palm Grove Restaurant serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner with Indian Ocean views — the variety covers Asian, continental and Maldivian cuisines. The buffet is positively noted for its range of Asian cuisine. The Blue Lagoon Bar, set among the Water Villas, serves casual lunch including burgers, pizzas, salads and a hi-tea buffet, and doubles as a dinner venue with steaks, candlelit dinners and daily catches. The Blue Lagoon Bar has a sundeck with direct ocean breezes and serves as the atmospheric evening spot for Water Villa guests in particular. The Fisherman's Bar offers karaoke, a dance floor, live music and DJ on selected evenings. The Beach Hut is noted as not being part of the all-inclusive package — confirm beverage inclusions clearly before choosing a meal plan. Tip: Dine at the Blue Lagoon Bar for at least one evening dinner rather than the main buffet — the candle-lit steaks and daily-catch seafood in the overwater setting among the Water Villas is a materially different dining experience from the Palm Grove buffet, and the sundeck atmosphere is particularly pleasant in the evening wind.

Question 5

What diving is available and what makes the surrounding area special?

Accepted Answer

The Oiyaa (formerly Fiha Dive) PADI-certified dive centre operates on the island. Two Bauer Verticus compressors and a separate Nitrox compressor support air and Nitrox diving. Unlimited non-limit dive packages are available and Nitrox is free for certified divers. Multilingual PADI instructors offer courses from beginner to Divemaster level. The dive sites immediately accessible include some of the most celebrated in South Male Atoll — Guraidhoo, Kandooma and Cocoa sites are nearby and offer some of the Maldives' strongest pelagic encounters. Manta rays and whale sharks are found in the area September to December. Important practical note: dive insurance including coverage for hyperbaric chamber treatment is mandatory — guests without valid insurance cannot dive. Tip: Confirm that your dive insurance includes hyperbaric chamber treatment before travelling — the dive centre enforces this requirement and those who arrive without compliant insurance cannot participate in guided dives. This requirement applies to all levels of diver.

Question 6

What is the island character and what makes Fihalhohi distinctive?

Accepted Answer

Fihalhohi is one of the oldest and most established resort islands in the Maldives and is the last island on the south-western rim of South Male Atoll. The island is 80,000 sqm (8 hectares) of lush natural vegetation — mature coconut palms, native trees and tropical flowers create dense shading between accommodation and the beach that is noted as rare among Maldives resorts. The shade provides genuine relief from the midday sun for children and adults on sun loungers. The island can be circumnavigated on foot in 10-15 minutes. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed — mix is predominantly European, with a long tradition of German, Swiss, Russian, British, French and Italian visitors. A strong repeat-guest base returns year after year, a reliable indicator of sustained quality. Tip: The shading from the mature palms along the beach is particularly valuable for families with young children and those who burn easily — this is a genuine physical comfort advantage over resorts with cleared or younger vegetation that provides minimal shade at midday.

Question 7

What activities are available beyond diving and snorkelling?

Accepted Answer

Water: scuba diving, snorkelling (house reef and guided trips), kayaking, catamaran sailing, windsurfing, fishing, water skiing, parasailing, banana boat, rowing. Excursions: dolphin watching cruise, manta ray excursion (September to December), turtle excursion, island hopping, night fishing. Land: Huvandhumaa Spa (Balinese and international treatments), gym (24-hour access), games room, library, badminton, volleyball, table tennis. Evening: Fisherman's Bar karaoke nights, live music bands, DJ, dance floor. Special dining: candlelit beach dinner, private barbecue, romantic arrangements. Children's activities include playground access and supervised beach games. Tip: Book the manta ray cruise between September and December — this window aligns with the peak period for manta encounters around the southern South Male Atoll channels, and the Fihalhohi position on the south-western rim of the atoll makes it one of the closer base points for these excursions.

Question 8

What is the Huvandhumaa Spa like?

Accepted Answer

The Huvandhumaa Spa is set within the island's tropical vegetation and offers Balinese and international treatments. Services include full-body massage, couples massage, reflexology, and facial treatments. A Jacuzzi is available at the spa for relaxation before or after treatments. The spa setting within the palm and vegetation-dense island interior provides a naturally tranquil environment. Treatments are charged separately from meal plans. Tip: Book the spa for late morning on a day when you plan a long afternoon snorkel — the house reef snorkelling is most productive in the late afternoon as currents ease and fish activity increases, and a morning spa session pairs well with an afternoon reef session.

Question 9

How is the Wi-Fi and what practical things should guests know?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. South Male Atoll proximity to Male generally supports better connectivity than remote atolls. All rooms have minibars, air conditioning, fans, ceiling fans, telephones and in-room safes. Festive season fees apply and must be paid directly at the resort — confirm current rates at booking. A mandatory transfer is arranged by the resort. Transfer charges are paid on arrival. Dive insurance including hyperbaric chamber treatment coverage is mandatory for all divers. The Beach Hut bar on the northern beach is not included in the all-inclusive package — beverages there are charged separately. Tip: Confirm at booking which bars and venues are included under your specific meal plan — the Beach Hut is excluded from the all-inclusive package, and beverages consumed there are charged separately. Clarifying this avoids unexpected checkout additions.

Question 10

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children of all ages are welcome. Infants under 1 year travel free on the speedboat. Cribs and extra beds are available subject to room type and occupancy limits — charges apply and are paid at the resort. A children's playground is on the island. The lush vegetation and shaded beach area make the resort well-suited to families with young children during the hottest part of the day. The buffet includes child-friendly food options. Special children's meals can be requested in advance. Tip: Book beach-facing rooms in the shaded vegetation section for families with young children — the dense palm coverage provides natural sun protection during the midday hours that most beach rooms at Maldives resorts lack, which is practically valuable for families with young skin.

Question 11

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The intimate 10-15 minute island circuit, the Water Villa overwater experience and the blue lagoon atmosphere create a naturally romantic setting. Honeymoon courtesy gifts include a wine bottle, a cake and a fruit basket. A private candlelit beach dinner can be arranged by the resort team. Water Villas are the most-requested honeymoon accommodation for the four-poster bed, overwater deck with lagoon views and direct water access. The resort's quiet, relaxed character — with strong repeat-guest loyalty and an unhurried atmosphere — suits couples who want a genuine retreat rather than a high-energy resort. Tip: Arrange the private candlelit beach dinner through the resort in advance of arrival — the setup requires coordination with the team and confirming it before the trip means the first available calm evening can be allocated without delay once on the island.

Question 12

What are the main pros of staying at Fihalhohi Island Resort?

Accepted Answer

Direct beach-accessible house reef: among the strongest coral reefs in South Male Atoll, reachable by swimming from shore, with sharks, turtles, rays and manta rays (September to December). Mature natural vegetation: one of the most naturally shaded resort islands in the Maldives — palm trees provide genuine midday shade across the beach and accommodation areas. Water Villas with reef shark lagoon views: 12 overwater villas with large decks and direct staircase reef access — consistently the standout accommodation on the island. World-class surrounding dive sites: Guraidhoo, Kandooma and Cocoa channels are among South Male Atoll's most celebrated dive locations. Blue Lagoon Bar overwater dinner setting: candlelit seafood and steak dining above the water among the Water Villas — one of the most atmospheric dining positions in the atoll. Nitrox free for certified divers and unlimited dive packages: genuine dive value relative to comparable Maldives resort dive operations. Strong repeat-guest base: a consistent indicator of sustained quality — the island welcomes multiple-visit guests each year. South-western atoll position: the last island on the rim produces an open horizon feel and access to some of the most remote and undisturbed reefs in the atoll. Tip: The 12 Water Villas are the defining accommodation at Fihalhohi and are frequently fully booked — for those who specifically want the overwater experience, booking as far in advance as possible and confirming Villa availability with the resort before committing to travel dates is strongly advisable.

Question 13

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

South Male Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April delivers the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best underwater visibility. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds, lower rates and fewer guests. Manta rays and whale sharks are found around the southern South Male Atoll channels from September to December — this is the peak window for these encounters from Fihalhohi. The house reef is productive year-round. The resort has a strong history of repeat-visit those who return both in peak and off-peak seasons. Tip: Plan a September to December stay if manta ray or whale shark encounters are a priority — this window overlaps with both the improving post-monsoon conditions and the peak pelagic season in the southern South Male Atoll channels accessible from Fihalhohi.

Question 14

What practical things should guests know before booking?

Accepted Answer

Dive insurance including hyperbaric chamber treatment coverage is mandatory for all divers — guests without valid insurance cannot participate in guided dives and this should be arranged before departure. The Beach Hut bar on the northern beach is not included in the all-inclusive package — beverages consumed there are charged separately. Festive season fees apply for stays covering Christmas and New Year — confirm current rates at booking. All rooms have minibars, air conditioning, fans and in-room safes. Cribs and extra beds are available at additional cost. The island is 8 hectares of dense vegetation — one of the most naturally shaded resort islands in South Male Atoll. Tip: Confirm the Beach Hut beverage exclusion from the all-inclusive package before settling into a daily routine that includes drinks there — the location on the northern beach makes it a natural spot to stop during island walks, and knowing it falls outside the plan avoids checkout surprises.

Question 15

How does Fihalhohi compare to other South Male Atoll resorts?

Accepted Answer

Fihalhohi is an established 4-star resort at the south-western end of South Male Atoll, positioned as a value-accessible reef and dive destination with genuine natural character. Compared to luxury 5-star resorts in the atoll, Fihalhohi lacks private pool villas, multi-restaurant fine dining programmes and modern luxury interiors. Compared to other 3-4 star options in the atoll, it stands out for the natural vegetation shading, the healthy house reef, the Blue Lagoon Bar overwater dinner setting and the world-class surrounding dive sites. The 12 Water Villas are the accommodation equivalent of what many 5-star resorts offer as their entry-level overwater category — at a notably lower price point. The repeat-guest loyalty across decades of operation is the most reliable indicator of sustained value delivery. Tip: The 12 Water Villas deliver an overwater reef-access experience that competes with significantly higher-priced properties in South Male Atoll — those who specifically want the overwater villa experience at a lower total cost than luxury resorts should prioritise booking these villas early.
