Question 1

How do I get from the airport to the resort?

Accepted Answer

Amilla Maldives is located in Baa Atoll and is reached by a 35-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport, operated by Manta Air. International flights must arrive in Male before 3:30 PM for a same-day seaplane transfer. Seaplanes operate daylight hours only. Guests departing on international flights before 9 AM may need to leave the resort the previous evening. Alternatively, a 20-minute domestic flight from Velana to Dharavandhoo Airport followed by a 10-minute speedboat is available — this option suits guests with late international departures or those not comfortable on small aircraft. Flight details must be shared at least 5 days before arrival. All arrivals are welcomed at the Amilla Lounge in the seaplane terminal. Tip: Choose the domestic flight plus speedboat if your international flight lands after 3 PM — it is a longer journey but removes the daylight deadline pressure and is available later in the day.

Question 2

Is there a house reef and how is the snorkelling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Amilla has one of the most exceptional house reefs in the Maldives, considered among the top 10 house reefs by Travel+Leisure Southeast Asia. The reef circles the entire island. The sunset side has coral gardens teeming with marine life. The sunrise side features a dramatic drop-off suitable for confident snorkellers. The Blue Hole — a natural underwater sinkhole — is accessible by guided excursion and is a signature experience. Marine life includes reef sharks, turtles, eagle rays, octopuses, schools of reef fish and manta rays. Guests near Hanifaru Bay (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the world's largest manta ray feeding hotspot) can access manta encounters from May to November. Snorkelling equipment and fins are provided complimentary for all guests. A guided snorkelling excursion of the house reef is available as a complimentary experience. Currents at the southern tip and near the water villa jetty end are strong — the resort advises against snorkelling at those points. Swimming is not permitted in front of the marina entrance. Tip: Book a guided Blue Hole snorkelling excursion within your first 2 days — the guide dramatically improves the experience by identifying marine life that is easy to miss without expert direction.

Question 3

What room types and villa categories are available?

Accepted Answer

The resort has 67 villas and residences — one of the most spacious villa counts relative to island size in the Maldives. All villas have private pools. Categories include Reef Water Pool Villas (overwater with direct reef access), Beach Pool Villas (beachfront with lush garden privacy), Tree House Villas (elevated in the forest canopy), two and three-bedroom Residences (for families or groups), and a unique Bubble Tent (glamping on a private beach). Entry-level overwater villas are 220 sqm. All villas feature a Katheeb (personal butler), in-villa pool and generous outdoor space. Moet champagne is available at breakfast. Bicycles and snorkelling equipment are provided complimentary to every guest. Tip: Reef Water Pool Villas are the best choice for snorkellers — the reef is directly below and accessible at any time from the villa. Beach Pool Villas are recommended for families with children as they offer more open outdoor space and beach proximity.

Question 4

How is the food?

Accepted Answer

The resort has eight restaurants, the most of any resort reviewed in this document. Dining options span Japanese (Feeling Koi), Maldivian and beach barbecue nights, Mediterranean, Indian, wellness-focused cuisine, sushi and a beach club. All restaurants are a la carte — there is no single buffet. Guests on Half Board or Full Board dine across the restaurants included in their plan. Children share the full adult menu at all restaurants; there are no separate children menus (except at certain outlets). Homemade ice cream is complimentary throughout the day for all guests. Food quality is consistently described as among the best available in the Maldives. Dinner reservations must be booked in advance each day — this is a standard requirement, not an optional step. Tip: Book dinner reservations for the full duration of your stay on arrival day — restaurants fill up and popular venues (particularly the Japanese restaurant and Maldivian beach nights) are not available on the night you want if left until the day before.

Question 5

What is the Katheeb butler service like?

Accepted Answer

Every villa is assigned a Katheeb — a dedicated personal butler who is the primary point of contact for all requests throughout the stay. Katheebs are reachable via WhatsApp and arrange dinner reservations, activity bookings, transportation across the island, special setups and daily schedules. The Amilla mobile app is available for communication and activity booking. Staff-to-guest ratios are high, with front-line staff outnumbering guests. Tip: Download the Amilla app before arrival and connect with your Katheeb on arrival day — the app makes communication and planning significantly easier, especially for coordinating multi-restaurant dinner bookings.

Question 6

What activities are available?

Accepted Answer

Non-motorised water sports included for all guests: snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing (wave conditions permitting), windsurfing and catamaran sailing. Motorised activities available at additional cost: jet skis, Seabobs, Jetblades, parasailing and private speedboat tours. Land activities: daily yoga and meditation, indoor and outdoor jungle gym, 3 km running and walking trail, two flood-lit tennis courts, football pitch (with complimentary group coaching 6 days per week), volleyball. Evening activities: moonlit movie nights, island picnics, mixology workshops, perfume blending, fire shows, hula performances and live music. Dive Butler (PADI) provides dive courses and trips to Baa Atoll sites. Hanifaru Bay manta excursions are bookable seasonally (May to November). Tip: The complimentary weekly football coaching sessions and tennis court access are underused highlights — particularly good for families or active those who want structured exercise beyond the pool.

Question 7

How is the spa?

Accepted Answer

The Javvu Spa offers Thai massage, Ayurvedic treatments and body scrubs. The spa is positioned as part of the broader wellness programme, which includes daily yoga, meditation and personalised wellness menus. Treatments must be booked in advance. The spa is not included in standard meal plan rates. Tip: Combine a spa treatment with a Hanifaru Bay manta excursion on alternating days — the physical exertion of a morning snorkel session pairs well with an afternoon spa recovery.

Question 8

What is the island environment like?

Accepted Answer

Amilla occupies a 23.5-hectare island — one of the larger resort islands in the Maldives. The interior is dense jungle with jungle paths, winding bike trails, a football pitch and yoga platforms. The resort is part of the Small Luxury Hotels Considerate Collection, with a strong sustainability focus. Endangered white-tailed tropicbird populations are present on the island. Most of the island is untouched jungle. Bicycles are the primary mode of transport across the island. Tip: Explore the jungle interior by bike at dawn — the bird activity, fruit bats and natural sounds before the rest of the island wakes up is a distinctive and memorable experience.

Question 9

How is the Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. Connectivity supports messaging, video calls and streaming. Baa Atoll location is closer to Male than Gaafu Dhaalu, which generally results in more reliable satellite connectivity than in the furthest southern atolls. Tip: Even with reliable Wi-Fi, consider using the stay to deliberately disconnect — the Amilla app handles all practical needs on the island without requiring a full internet connection.

Question 10

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children of all ages are welcome. The Sultan's Village Kids Club operates on the island for children of specified ages — confirm the current age range and operating hours with the resort before arrival. Children share the full adult restaurant menus at all outlets; there are no separate children menus except at certain restaurants. Two and three-bedroom residences are available for families. Seaplane transfer for children aged 2-11 costs approximately USD 451 return. The domestic flight plus speedboat for children aged 2-11 costs approximately USD 358 return. Tip: For families with young children, the two-bedroom beach residence is the most practical option — it provides separate sleeping areas, more outdoor space and is closer to the beach than the overwater villa categories.

Question 11

What is the evening and nightlife atmosphere like?

Accepted Answer

Evenings at Amilla are activity-rich but not club-oriented. Weekly scheduled events include fire shows on the beach, hula performances, live music, movie nights and Maldivian cultural nights with beach barbecues. The beach club and multiple bars provide social settings after dinner. There is no nightclub. The resort atmosphere is relaxed and nature-centred after dark. Tip: Check the weekly entertainment schedule on arrival — the fire show and Maldivian cultural beach night are the two most popular evening experiences and both have fixed weekly dates.

Question 12

What dining plan options are available?

Accepted Answer

B&B (bed and breakfast), Half Board, Full Board and Dine-Around All-Inclusive are all available. Half Board and above allow dinner at a number of the resort's eight restaurants. All guests receive complimentary homemade ice cream throughout the day regardless of meal plan. Non-motorised water sports are complimentary for all guests.

Question 13

What are the main pros of staying at Amilla Maldives?

Accepted Answer

Top 10 house reef in the Maldives: voted by Travel+Leisure Southeast Asia, with the Blue Hole and Hanifaru Bay manta access as additional unique features. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve location: Baa Atoll provides exceptional marine biodiversity not available in all areas of the Maldives. Eight restaurants with a la carte dining: the most diverse on-island dining of any resort in this document, with consistently outstanding quality. Spaciousness: 67 villas across a 23.5-hectare island — one of the most generous space-per-guest ratios in the Maldives. Complimentary non-motorised water sports and snorkelling equipment for all guests. Distinctive accommodation options: treehouse villas, bubble tent and multi-bedroom residences alongside standard overwater and beach categories. Sustainability: part of the Small Luxury Hotels Considerate Collection with genuine eco-credentials including an endangered bird population on-site. High staff-to-guest ratio: front-line staff outnumber guests, resulting in attentive and personalised service. Complimentary Moet at breakfast: a luxury touch included as standard. Strong family and couples credentials: the resort successfully accommodates both markets simultaneously. Tip: The seaplane transfer is among the most expensive in the Maldives at USD 751 return per adult — factor this into the total budget and compare with resorts closer to Male where transfers cost significantly less.

Question 14

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Amilla is positioned as a leading honeymoon destination in Baa Atoll. Reef Water Pool Villas and Beach Pool Villas are the most requested honeymoon categories. Special honeymoon touches including room decoration, champagne, a complimentary floating breakfast and a guided snorkelling excursion are arranged on request at booking stage. The Bubble Tent — a glamping dome on a private beach — is a unique honeymoon accommodation option not available at other Maldives resorts. Candlelit private beach dinners and sandbank picnics can be arranged by the Katheeb. Tip: Book the Bubble Tent at least 3 months in advance for peak season (December-April) — it is the single most-requested accommodation on the island and typically sells out well ahead of other categories.

Question 15

What is the best season to visit for manta rays?

Accepted Answer

Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located a short boat ride from Amilla, is the world's largest known manta ray feeding hotspot. Manta ray gatherings at Hanifaru Bay are most reliable from May to November, coinciding with the southwest monsoon which drives the plankton blooms that attract the mantas. Whale sharks also frequent the area during this period. During peak feeding events, hundreds of manta rays can gather simultaneously. Outside this window, manta encounters are still possible in the wider Baa Atoll waters but are less predictable. Tip: Plan a stay that overlaps with at least one week in June, July or August for the highest probability of a Hanifaru Bay mass manta feeding event — these are the months of maximum plankton concentration and manta congregation.
