The Bungalow we stayed was very nice. |But the management is very disorganized.|| They are very biased and treat the local expats visiting very differently than the internationals. ||Issue 4 is very important. Please read. ||The issues I had with them were: ||1. The boat had to pick us up at 11.15 am. Instead, we started at 12:30 pm. We were very hungry and reached there around 1.30pm. We were asked to go to have food immediately before even checking in. ||2. We had booked a 3-person package, and the rooms were not even ready for the third person. We had to request many times for them to come organize the room. ||3. Food was very average. The quality was very poor. They told me it would be a Maladivan buffet, which we were very excited about. But most of the main dishes were just fish. People who won't eat fish had to eat just salad, and some side which was very disappointing. ||4. Ara Iru Restaurant has a dress code which we were not informed beforehand. I was wearing a crop top and the manager came to me and asked me *"Where is your shirt?!!"*. Fricking unacceptable behavior. This is not the way of confronting a guest. Whereas there were many internationals wearing crop tops and sleeveless dresses. Such a biased behavior. 🚫||5. We asked around to buy a full bottle of liquor. But later decided not to get it because of its high price. But they charged for it and was added in the final bill. We had to prove to them that we didn't get the bottle. Poor management. ||6. They told us all the meals were included for the stay. We stayed for one night and the next day around 10am they told us lunch is not included and we had to pay for it. ||7. We had our boat at 14:00pm. Since they told us lunch is not included. We decided to take the 10.30am boat back to Male city. So we had to hurry our check out and pack everything in a hurry. Very very stressful and disappointing. ||8. They give high preference to internationals and are very eager to make money out of everything. |Fricking expensive for this bad and stressful experience. ||When confronted at the reception telling them I'll be giving them a bad review they smirked and said go on. This is the level of attitude they have. ||Completely not acceptable and very disorganized management.||Overall, I would never go back.

Unglaublich freundlicher Staff. Bisher aber leider eher well done anstelle Medium. Fazit insgesamt. Nette kleine Insel mit sehr bemühtem Personal. Wer Ruhe sucht wird hier sicher fündig. Qualität fällt insgesamt aber ziemlich ab.

Makunudu excelled in a lot of ways. It’s not pretentious which was a key factor in choosing this resort. There are mega expensive resorts within touching distance of Makunudu.|Yes the rooms aren’t pish posh but they’re perfect if you’re after a tropical island vibe. The rooms are serviced every morning and evening with water, fresh towels etc.|The beaches are beautiful - just bring some water footwear as that makes wading in to the sea a lot more comfortable.|The food is excellent, the employees are clearly happy and will do anything for you.|Be clear on pricing and really investigate what is and what isn’t included in full board and all-inclusive. We almost went AI but realised that it was better to have total flexibility on what you want to drink and where you drink it.|The snorkeling is incredible. We have snorkeled in the Caribbean and other parts of the world but this is the best by far. I did my research and there are world class reefs close to Makunudu and local tours stop by the Makunudu house reef. We saw a lot of live thriving coral, sharks, turtles eels and an array of beautiful fish - the reef is teeming. We leave very impressed and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

We returned to Makunudu in October 2024 after our first visit 26 years ago and it still remains a paradise island. The boat ride going to the island was very bumpy but still enjoyable.|On our arrival we were greeted by the General Manager Abdulla Shaugy and we showed him photos from our first visit and he asked could we send them to him as he is looking to create a collage of images from when the island first started to take guests. So maybe if you have any photos you could forward them onto Makunudu.||We were lucky enough to get the same Bungalow No. 19 as we originally stayed in, home from home. The room is near to the sunset bar where you can have a cocktail drink while watching the sun go down.|We were all inclusive but there is also a mini bar in the room. The daily bottled water is free but any alcoholic, non alcoholic and food are chargeable. You can either raid the mini bar or take a short walk to the bar for a free drink. Also thank you to our male maid who visited our room twice a day to clean it.||There is just one bar and one restaurant on the island but these are more than sufficient to cater for you. All of the bar and restaurant staff were so friendly and helpful, thank you to all of them. The food is amazing so much to choose from. Breakfast and lunch are buffets and on these visits, you are given a large menu to choose from for your evening meal.|There are BBQ and Maldivian nights where the cooks prepare your meal fresh outside and the meals are really tasty. On a couple of nights a week you sit outside on the beach.||One night the two of us were sat together in the bar and Abdulla asked if we would like to join him at his table and he introduced us to the island owners daughter. We reminisced about how Makunudu has remained traditional in the Maldivian way, what a great night.||If you need it there is free wi-fi available on the island, the signal in the bar and restaurant is strong but outside these areas you will struggle to get a signal.||There is now sand all around the island so if you pick low tide you are able to walk around it. As I did before I snorkelled around the island and saw turtles and small sharks. You are guaranteed to see small sharks next to the jetty where the boats are moored. We did hire a kayak from the dive centre, this was fun but do pick a calm day.||We truly loved the peaceful time on Makunudu and hope of returning next year.

Makunudu is truly a gem in the Maladives. It has the pearly white beaches, the endless blue waters filled with reefs (in front of the island) and the most lovable staff! ||The way they handle business at Makunudu enhances you stay. They put a max to the island for only 30ish bungalows which creates privacy, but with the option to engage with others or partake in fun activities. ||The Bungalows are clean, traditional and really get you into that holiday feeling. And to top it up walking out of the backdoor lands you right on the beach! our stay was perfect. Thank you everyone at Makunudu.

If you want an island in the Maldives to relax, enjoy the sunsets / sunrise, rising of the moon a place to swim among the coral, tropical fish, turtles, Nursing/Reef Sharks and Manta Ray's, then this the place for you. You can walk around th Island in 15mins, the majority of the rooms have a 5sec walkway to the beach and the vegetation is rich and green. It is a very natural island with crabs, sandcrabs, Herons, Terns and Water Chickens roaming freely. The restaurant and staff are first class with a bar area that leads out to a veranda over looking the ocean and visiting sharks in the evening. You can loan out the snorkeling equipment, go on day trips to other reefs to see the turtles etc as well as diving. A great island with the rooms hidden away on approach and would definitely consider returning. Nothing pretentious and as natural as can be. Loved it

This was my first trip to the Maldives, visiting Makunudu Island in December 2024 with my mother. Having traveled to many Asian countries, I can confidently say this resort is the best I've ever experienced, and I look forward to returning soon. The experience was incredible; it is truly a paradise with stunning beaches and an authentic tropical island vibe. Our bungalow, though not yet refurbished, had a nice beach on the jetty side and partial sea views directly from inside. The staff was kind and welcoming, making us feel at home. Mr. Shri, the reservation manager, contacted me via WhatsApp before our arrival, which made me feel more comfortable and reassured about our upcoming stay. Our waiter Bhasker was friendly and attentive, always mindful of our halal food preferences. While this resort isn't ultra-luxury by Maldivian standards, everything was of high quality: the accommodation, service, food, and beds, plus free Wi-Fi. Contrary to some reviews, our speedboat transfer from Velana Airport was smooth with no waiting time. The departure was also well-organized; our flight was in the evening but we were lucky to enjoy the resort until 4PM. Because it was a rainy day, we received a late checkout and could stay in our room until 1:30 PM and our last lunch was included. Our six-night stay flew by, and we wished for more time. We left the island feeling as if we were leaving home. Thank you, Makunudu, for an unforgettable stay! Small remarks: There has been leaks in the bathroom sink and hopefully will be refurbished soon. The speedboat transfer is quite expensive (249$ per person) Overall, these minor issues didn’t overshadow the wonderful experience we had. I highly recommend this resort to anyone seeking relaxation in a beautiful natural setting. Thank you, Makunudu team; we will definitely return and see you all again soon!

I was excited for my third visit to the Maldives and the reviews suggested that this was a good island for peace and quiet. However, as a solo traveller, I felt that I was treated worse than other guests. I arrived into the airport at 9.30 am and made my way to the pick up booth to be told I had to wait for other guests on a different flight which had been delayed. I asked to speak to the resort who promised me that I would be collected by 11.30. The time came and went and no sign of collection. I spoke with them again. The speedboat had just left and would take 45 minutes. So they made me wait for 3 hours in the airport before transferring me, I feel this was because I was a solo traveller as I saw a couple arriving the next day with the boat to themselves. Not a great start. After lunch I was taken to my bungalow which again was possibly the worst on the island. No idyllic beach access. No view of the beautiful sea and skyline. The sea was possibly accessible if you were a mountain goat as you either had to climb over trees and branches, or cross your neighbours' access. I went to reception and asked to be moved. Luckily for me, another couple were arranging their check out for the following day so reception were able to give me a choice of alternative bungalows. The second bungalow had the beach access their marketing promises and was exactly what I was expecting. I believe that they place guests in the rubbish one first to see if you will complain. The room itself was spacious with good facilities. However, the first night I experienced 3 giant cockroaches in my room - one of which was on the bed, the other two in the bathroom. I rang reception for them to send someone to remove them. They never came. I managed to get the one out from the bedroom and shut the bathroom door and wedged a towel under the gap. Safe to say, I didn't sleep well. When it happened again, someone did come and filled the bungalow with toxic chemical spray. The restaurant was fine with limited choice for the buffet, and the evening meal was high standard. Again as a solo traveller I felt overlooked for drinks service. Snorkelling was average. When passing on my comments to the management I was offered a free one night stay to be added on to my next booking with them. I explained that with so many other much nicer resorts to visit, and with the comments above, why would I return here? I believe they do have return guests who are treated much better than first time visitors and I wonder if these guests have actually experienced other resorts in the Maldives. There are many other resorts in this price bracket which are much better than this.

The Bungalow we stayed was very nice. But the management is very disorganized. They are very biased and treat the local expats visiting very differently than the internationals. Issue 4 is very important. Please read. The issues I had with them were: 1. 🚫 5. Completely not acceptable and very disorganized management. Overall, I would never go back.

From the moment you are picked up at the airport in the hotels speedboat, everything is luxury, and you really do not have to think about a thing. This island resort only had 38 bungalows, so limited numbers. If you are looking for quiet and relaxation this is the place for you. No tv, but Wi-Fi, if you need it. We had a bungalow directly on the beach, with a shared area with chairs and a swing, and sunloungers at the water. Rooms are large, and ours had had a refurbished shower, and although not outside was amazing. We were on all inclusive, and plenty of choice for food at every meal, and plenty of choice at the bar, you can have drinks not included, but need to pay for these. But we found such a great choice that we didn't need to. Great service in the bar from Abib. The resturant was self service buffet for breakfast and lunch, but our waiter was always looking after us with drinks, coffee etc, nothing was too much trouble. At night we had a full served meal, with one night sitting outside by the ocean, and another night was a bbq. Big shout out to Ismail, who really made our holiday. If you had to describe paradise this place comes very close, after 12 days travelling around India, coming to Makunudu was amazing.

This hotel is utterly charming. There are only 37 bungalows so not crowded, and the staff are what really make this paradise perfect. When you get on the boat at Malé you are given a nice cool towel and a bottle of water. When you arrive someone is waiting at the jetty with star garlands made from leaves. During check in you are given another towel and a delicious iced tea. The team work really hard and give you a personalised service. The beaches are pristine white sand with turquoise water. Snorkel equipment is available to borrow (no deposit), including full face masks. I'm not sure what the situation is for scuba gear, or kayaks. The bungalows are a perfect size. A HUGE bed, a partly al fresco bathroom, deckchairs, and sun loungers. Feels private, and you are only seconds away from the water. There's a handy tap at the back to rinse the sand from your feet. If my bathroom door was open I could hear my immediate neighbour in the shower or flushing the toilet. 5/7 days dinner is from a set menu. Soup, appetisers, fish/chicken/vegetarian mains, choice of 2 puddings and tea/coffee. There is a Madivian buffet on a Tuesday (delicious curry from a live cooking station) and BBQ on Fridays (which I'll miss as I'm heading home). The sandbar serves soft drinks, coffee, alcohol and snacks during the day. The flora and fauna are marvellous. 20+ hermit crabs by my back door. Crabs on the beach during the evening. Cheeky herons throughout the day and night. Sharks by the jetty during the early evening. Lizards/geckos, noisy birds with huge feet, plus the fish in the clear water. The place is kept really clean. Housekeeping came twice a day. I would just suggest a broom is added to the rooms so that any sand we've traipsed in can be dealt with straight away by us guests! We had rain for the first day or so and the staff kept apologising! It is warm rain and it's so peaceful. We went to the Maldives following a week in India and it was just the tonic we needed. I wish I had the names of the super staff to give them the credit in this review. Interestingly, I only saw 2 female members of staff, the team is effectively all male. What stopped this being a 5* review is that in spite of telling them on arrival that I was checking out the day after the date listed on their forms, and being told "that's fine", they expected me to leave a day early. I'm not sure being on the phone to the travel company at 21:30 is what I needed. Then, they asked me to check out at 05:30 for a 13:20 flight (almost 8 hours beforehand, despite it being a 45 minute journey from the island to the airport). They told me the boat wouldn't be back until 13:00. I appreciate that journeys need to be efficient but this really takes the biscuit. Perhaps they needed my room for a quick turnaround, who knows? My usual waiter wasn't at my last breakfast, I was disappointed. This meant I waited 17 minutes to be offered coffee. I had already eaten and needed to go back and finish packing so just had a quick sip. Again, a disappointing end to a good trip.

We have been regulars to the Maldives for over 12 years. We always stayed at a beautiful laid back island called Rihiveli which is currently undergoing renovation. In search for another island with a similar atmosphere, we came across Makunundu Island. After reading lots of reviews, I gathered that there were some bungalows with hardly any privacy and no sandy beach in front or very clumsy beach access. When making the booking directly with Makunundu, I specifically asked for a bungalow with easy beach access which was "well noted". However, when we arrived we were given possibly the worst bungalow on the island. Unless you wanted to climb over a tree trunk and sharp rocks, a blue pipe and some discarded sand bags, you had no direct access to the sea from your property. The only option was to cross over your neighbours properties to make it into the water. The sun beds were cramped into a shaded area with no space to move them anywhere else if you wanted to sunbathe. My husband went back to the reception and asked for a different bungalow, but the island was fully booked and no alternative could be offered until "maybe tomorrow". We tried to find sun beds to spend the afternoon but the handful of them in the common area were all occupied. We tried to get our free snorkelling equipment but no sizes were available for me: "maybe tomorrow". We returned back to reception to speak to the GM and also mentioned that we specifically ask for a certain type of bungalow and were told: "We do not entertain requests from first timers. When you come back as a repeat guest, we will give you what you ask for".... This was quite a harsh statement and makes you not want to come back to be honest. The next morning, we were prepared to leave the island and move to a neighbouring resort if no other option had become available, but luckily we were moved to a new place. The new location was paradise, we had privacy, direct beach access, a beautiful view. It made all the difference and we were the happiest people for the remainder of the holidays. The bungalow itself was also bigger and although not upgraded yet, it was sparkling clean and very comfortable. Apart from the unfortunate room allocation, everything else was perfect. Food was delicious with tons of choices, staff always eager to help and make your stay better (special thanks to Ismail in the restaurant and Mohammed from the housekeeping team). The island itself is tiny but beautiful and the house reef stunning. Mosquitos are an issue so bring along your repellent. Fumigation happens regularly but there are still plenty of them around. After a very rough and disappointing start, we had a wonderful holiday on the island and will definitely come back again if a bungalow in a nice location is available and guaranteed. If you would like to see a comparison of the "beaches" of our and our neighbours bungalow, check out the photos. The discrepancy between the bungalows is huge and considering everyone is paying the same price, everyone should enjoy the same facilities.

Makunudu excelled in a lot of ways. It’s not pretentious which was a key factor in choosing this resort. There are mega expensive resorts within touching distance of Makunudu. Yes the rooms aren’t pish posh but they’re perfect if you’re after a tropical island vibe. The rooms are serviced every morning and evening with water, fresh towels etc. The beaches are beautiful - just bring some water footwear as that makes wading in to the sea a lot more comfortable. The food is excellent, the employees are clearly happy and will do anything for you. Be clear on pricing and really investigate what is and what isn’t included in full board and all-inclusive. We almost went AI but realised that it was better to have total flexibility on what you want to drink and where you drink it. The snorkeling is incredible.

The boat ride going to the island was very bumpy but still enjoyable. On our arrival we were greeted by the General Manager Abdulla Shaugy and we showed him photos from our first visit and he asked could we send them to him as he is looking to create a collage of images from when the island first started to take guests. So maybe if you have any photos you could forward them onto Makunudu. We were lucky enough to get the same Bungalow No. 19 as we originally stayed in, home from home. The room is near to the sunset bar where you can have a cocktail drink while watching the sun go down. We were all inclusive but there is also a mini bar in the room. The daily bottled water is free but any alcoholic, non alcoholic and food are chargeable. You can either raid the mini bar or take a short walk to the bar for a free drink. Also thank you to our male maid who visited our room twice a day to clean it. There is just one bar and one restaurant on the island but these are more than sufficient to cater for you. All of the bar and restaurant staff were so friendly and helpful, thank you to all of them. The food is amazing so much to choose from. Breakfast and lunch are buffets and on these visits, you are given a large menu to choose from for your evening meal. There are BBQ and Maldivian nights where the cooks prepare your meal fresh outside and the meals are really tasty. On a couple of nights a week you sit outside on the beach. One night the two of us were sat together in the bar and Abdulla asked if we would like to join him at his table and he introduced us to the island owners daughter. We reminisced about how Makunudu has remained traditional in the Maldivian way, what a great night. If you need it there is free wi-fi available on the island, the signal in the bar and restaurant is strong but outside these areas you will struggle to get a signal. There is now sand all around the island so if you pick low tide you are able to walk around it. As I did before I snorkelled around the island and saw turtles and small sharks. You are guaranteed to see small sharks next to the jetty where the boats are moored. We did hire a kayak from the dive centre, this was fun but do pick a calm day. We truly loved the peaceful time on Makunudu and hope of returning next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed our latest stay on Makunudu earlier this month. From the moment we stepped off the speedboat and were welcomed by management and colleagues, we felt like we were back among friends. The respect shown to returning guests is quite remarkable and is in our experience unique. It cascades from the hugely likable GM, Mr Shaugy, downwards. We were delighted to be involved by Mr Shaugy in Makunudu's latest environmental project, a survey of this tiny Island's incredible 69 species of trees and other plants, which are now being identified by name plaques together with a very professionally produced colour photo guide held at reception. Our room had been tastefully upgraded since our last visit, with a new bathroom and shaded seating area outside. Elsewhere, the food, service and friendliness were of the same exemplary standard as we had experienced previously. Obviously we greatly look forward to our next stay and we thank everyone for making our most recent one so enjoyable and memorable.

Amazing, amazing, amazing is the only word that sums up this magical and idyllic island in The Maldives. The accommodation, staff, service and food were all incredibly good. Nothing was too much trouble and whatever the situation we were always made to feel special. We have visited many lovely parts of the world with great memories. Makunudu and the team of people will always remain the best experience ever.

Overall We have recently returned from a 10 day visit to Makunudu which couldn’t have been better. We had read the reviews before booking and noticed that many people return to the island and now, having experienced it for ourselves first hand, we can fully appreciate why! First impressions From the moment we boarded the speed boat for the transfer to the island and were handed cold towels and water we knew that we were in for a good stay. On arriving at the jetty we were lucky enough to see juvenile black tip reef sharks crusing the shallow waters which set the tone for the nature based experiences that were in store for us. Once we arrived we were ushered to the sandbar where we were given a complimentary iced tea and another cooling face towel. We were made to feel like members of the family from the outset. Hospitality The level of hospitality that we were afforded was faultless across the board. It is the type of place that anticipates what you need before you realise yourself. This was true across the board from management, to the restaurant and bar to housekeeping. The arrival and departure were handled extremely well with clear communications at all stages. The room was spotless and each day whilst were enjoying an amazing buffet breakfast whilst they were busy cleaning our room and making it like we had just arrived. Food The standard of food provided was five star restaurant every meal and they easily catered for specific dietary requirements. From the buffets, BBQs, Maldivian night, standard dining and snacks we were always excited about what was coming next. Entertainment We were lucky enough to be invited to the staff party whilst we were on the island, which was quite an experience! We also enjoyed karaoke, a local singer for the evening, Maldivian dancing and some very informative talks from the dive school team which were fascinating. Dive School The dive school deserves special mention. There were three of us in our party, one who had not been diving for years, one novice with a love of all things acquatic and one novice with a fear of water deeper than 5 feet! We were all given amazing experiences tailored to us individually from the incredibly competent, encouraging and friendly team; we have all walked away with memories that will last a lifetime. Each one of us were extremely touched with the amount of support and well created diving and snorkelling experiences. Natural environment The interior of the island is lush and green. There are hermit crabs, herons, lizards and fruit bats to enjoy before you even get into the water. The house reef is spectacular and we were lucky enough to see nurse sharks, black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, moray eels and innumerable surgeon fish, damsel fish and anemone fish to name but a few. The only thing that got us out of the water was darkness at the end of the day! Conclusion We were all incredibly sad to leave our island paradise at the end of our stay, the only thing that got us through the long flight home was the dream of returning in the future!

This is a world class resort, albeit on a small scale (72 beds). A true desert island situated in the North Male Atoll. Its clients are mainly returning guests who seek rest, relaxation and good food in a delightful and unpretentious environment. The warm sea and coral reef are your entertainment - with an accomplished dive team to help you enjoy it. No pools, swim up bars or other distractions spoil your relaxation. The staff, led by the GM and Operations Manager (Soonil) are very much in evidence and provide leadership and advice to a well trained staff who would be a credit to any European five star hotel. The Kitchen Brigade, mainly from Sri Lanka, provide a buffet and a la carte service of a very high standard, which compliments the delightful, rustic and very Maldivian dinning room and bar. The House Staff are mainly Maldivian drawn from all Atolls; it was a pleasure to chat to a few from Addu, so far from their home Atoll in the south, (memories of Gan being close to our hearts) as well as the ladies from the Naga Hills in Assam (to whom the British Army owes so much, and so many Commonwealth sons lie forever in their care. We remember and are grateful) (Your postcard is on the way Imli.) The Spa is excellent and provides a variety of treatments to those in need of their skilled hands. The guest accommodation, mainly crushed coral and hard wood construction, is spacious and all villas open on to the beach with a private outdoor lounging area. The Resort was one of the first to open in the Maldives and the accommodation reflects this. The King beds are very comfortable, but the bathrooms could do with an upgrade (in hand I understand). However, they are perfectly serviceable and are of an indoor/outdoor nature. The villas are serviced twice a day, and nothing is too much trouble for your room attendant. In summary, this little tropical gem is one of a very few true desert islands that provide accommodation and service to the small but discerning clientele who seek true rest and relaxation from a highly trained team who understand hospitality. As so many guests say to the GM on leaving - " change nothing (apart from the bathrooms)" That says it all. Thank you to you all. C &J G-W 12 August 2024

We have a wonderful short stay in this small and amazing island resort. We were greeted by warm and friendly front desk staff. We booked 4 beach villas, and our villa is spacious and has a lovely traditional Maldivian design. The white sandy beach is beautiful, and we also spotted a few baby sharks along the jetty area. The trails to the room are covered with well maintained trees and plants; providing a lovely canopy. Needless to say, it makes you connect to the beauty of nature. We enjoyed the delicious food, barbecue night, and the good service from the F&B team. A special thanks to Ms. Tharanga, who arranged our stay, Amitha and Bashka, for their friendly and outstanding services. Thank you, Manukudu Island Resort, for making our stay extra memorable, particularly a farewell for our friend.

I visited Makunudu with my wife back in 2021 and had a great experience at the property and the snorkelling around it. The reason for my review and rating now is that I did my first ever Scuba dive at this resort and still remember it to this day. We had a Discover Scuba session as a part of our package and dive master Claudia took us out to the water while it was raining and stormy with high-speed winds blowing. I am now a certified diver and have done dives in a few countries to know how irresponsible that was of the dive centre to take out two first timers in those conditions simply because we were 'suited up' . The island has two shores and we were taken to the water on both and had to exit the water because of how bad the conditions were. After giving up on the day, we decided to do it the next day and ended up doing two more dives with them, but to my shock they charged us for even the session that should never have happened because of adverse weather. Request the management to kindly take note, and that while divers sign waivers to incidents, it does not waive the responsibility of the dive masters to use their good sense and experience. Diving is a serious sport with risk to life, and any incident on the property assumes responsibility towards the management as well.

We do not usually return to a resort as have been disappointed by others in the past. We are on our last full day of a thirteen day stay, and our second visit to Makunudu. It was great to see so many familiar faces in the resort, the staff are obviously well looked after. Our waiter in the restaurant this time was Lasantha, and he was excellent, very attentive and friendly. It was also good to see Anwar who looked after us on our previous stay. We should also mention the other restaurant and bar staff are all very friendly, we felt very welcome. The food and drink was excellent right through, with lots of choice. We particularly linked choosing from a menu for the 5 days out of 7 when this was available for our evening meal, We started our stay in bungalow No. 6 which unfortunately was not suitable for us, but after a request to the reception staff, they moved us the following day to bungalow No. 1 which was excellent, The room was serviced by Abu Talib, who also looked after us on our previous stay, and he was excellent for us. We had a total of five visits to the spa, unfortunately one of the ladies was on leave, so we could not have a ‘couples’ treatment together. However, the treatments we did have were excellent. The snorkelling around the island was just as good as our previous visit, so many corals, lots of different types of fish, sharks and turtles, it was heaven. We look forward to returning again.

Be warned it can get very bumpy , so if you have back problems, then best take the sea plane. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff and shown to our bungalow. All of them face the sea. Room was clean and tidy. The shower room was open so you could gaze up to the sky whilst showering. The restaurant and bar area was very nice and the food was mostly a buffet affair, and catered for everyone. Staff were attentive and friendly. We had a complimentary 30 minute massage and also snorkelling. Every evening there was some sort of entertainment if you so wished. This is the perfect Island to come and relax and enjoy the wildlife and peace and quiet

If you are looking for a traditional style resort that is unpretentious and relaxed but with excellent food then this is the resort for you. This was our third visit to this resort and eighth to the Maldives.Since finding Makunudu we wouldn't consider anywhere else.We enjoyed the cocktail reception for returning guests where we were able to meet and chat to the management .We learnt that 80-90% of the guests were return visitors and the average age of the guests is over 40-45.The 36 bungalows are nestled in shady greenery a few steps to the ocean. The beach and wind direction vary with the season but while we were there 1-17 were on the windy side and 18-36 on the sheltered side. On the sheltered side there were more mosquitos and at times it was too hot to sit out on the beach. The bed was very comfortable and the shower had great water pressure with plenty of hot water. There is both a ceiling fan and air conditioning. There is a kettle with tea and instant coffee with coffeemate.2x500ml water bottles are supplied daily in the rooms .There is a refrigerated drawer in the room which keeps things cool but doesn't work particularly well.I made up some milk powder daily as I don't care for coffeemate and it curdled within 24 hours. The rooms are not perfect - we were unlucky enough to experience a few days of rain and the roof leaked over the desk area.An umbrella is supplied in the room .WiFi is free but is variable in the bungalows but we had no problems in the reception area. We went full board and saved over £1000 on the all inclusive price. We are not big drinkers but had wine and cocktails every day.The food is plentiful and half -board would have been enough however in my opinion the best meals are at lunchtime with a buffet of multiple salads and small tasting plates. There are always curries and poppadoms and fruit salad. There are noticably more vegetarian options than on our previous visit. There are a large variety of buffet breakfast options including an egg station expertly manned by the ever smiling Helal .He also oversees the tremendous Kottu Roshi on Maldivian night. Most evening meals are a set menu with options , except on barbecue night and Maldivian night. The food is beautifully presented and I particularly enjoyed the " in between" course, and the desserts. On occasion the fried fish and meat dishes were overcooked for my taste. We did have some excellent seared tuna and quite rare lamb and steak on other occasions..There are no set tables but you are assigned a waiter and we were well looked after by Ahmed. I consumed a kaleidoscope of colourful cocktails at the sunset bar ,expertly prepared by Habib .The house reef is excellent and close to the shore. The bay by the harbour is very calm and sheltered and ideal for beginners. There was no need to join the excursions as there is plenty to see on the house reef.We saw black tip reef sharks, numerous nurse sharks and turtles everyday and a large variety of reef fish.We also saw an octopus near the jetty. The coral is definitely improving since our last visit here. The dive centre has instituted a reef restoration project where you can adopt a coral or plant a coral. The latter requires a short dive and is open to non-divers. Please be aware that if you have any medical conditions you will need a fitness to dive certificate to undertake this activity. The resort is delightfully quiet most of the time and the evening entertainment is decidedly low key . The perfect place to relax and snorkel in a wonderful marine environment.

We were disappointed initially with our room due to the lack of privacy. We spent 3 nights of a 7 night holiday living out a suitcase until we were moved to a much better room. It was our 7th visit to the Maldives and had expected a detached bungalow but they are all semi detached. And definitely not as private as other islands as they are closer together. However that is the only negative so on to the positive! The food choice is excellent and the quality is incredible. Absolutely delicious and faultless. The staff are definitely the friendliest than any other resort we have been to. Lovely lovely people. You can kick off your shoes when you arrive and forget about them till you leave. Bliss.. The rooms are large and adequate, bathrooms are a bit dated but who cares? The dive centre was very quiet so my husband had several one to one dives which he was very pleased with. The beaches vary around the island due to wind and sea conditions but take some jelly or neoprene shoes as there is a lot of coral. There were lots of French and Italians on the island who are lovely people but despite topless sunbathing being illegal in the Maldives, they still seemed to think it was ok to do so. They do like their thongs as well. Not terribly appealing and a bit disrespectful to the local culture but thats common nowadays unfortunately. We both had a couple of massages at the spa and they were marvellous. Highly recommended is the Balinese massage. So overall a fabulous holiday and we would definitely go again. Hopefully next year!

This was my 7th visit to Makunudu which might tell you how much we love this little island. The rooms are getting a bit tired and ours had a leaking roof but it doesn't spoil the charm. It's a far cry from the upper class 5 star islands which seem to be the fashion now, just a rustic little gem, no shoes, no news. I take my shoes off on arrival and they don't go back on until I leave. It's a friendly laid back slice of heaven. All of the staff, gardeners, room boys, bar staff, waiters are all lovely and I believe they care about you enjoying yourself and will do whatever they can to make you happy. Unfortunately the management don't seem to care quite as much! I have emailed the island 3 times without a reply which I think is pretty bad as they always go on about how important their returners are! The previous managers were always visible and were always making sure you were happy and checking if there was anything they could do to make the stay even better. Unfortunately the present manager seems less interested..... The only downside this time was that the island had accepted a large Italian group booking which really changed the dynamic of the island. What is usually a quiet and tranquil holiday was suddenly disrupted by the group's constant noise. The other downside was that the normal table service evening meal, which is a particularly important thing for us, was cancelled because of the group on a couple of the nights and replaced by a buffet because the staff couldn't cope. Not acceptable as part of the normal experience. I have nothing against the group, they were just having a good time, BUT most people come to Makunudu for a quiet couples holiday, not noisy groups. I have heard that the island is taking bigger bookings now which will change the whole feel of the island. I did email the management even while still on the island but no reply and no one addressed my concern, even after I spoke to the reception about it. Such a shame if it is going to happen regularly as the returners will stop returning. I know that Mr. Shaugy reads these reviews and wonder if he might respond to this one? I would hope he might reassure the loyal Makunudu lovers that their next visit will be more peaceful, even if he won't reply to emails!

We have recently enjoyed a wonderful 2 weeks on this island. It was our 12 th visit to the Maldives and 3rd visit to Makunudu, returning for the rustic, natural charm of this beautiful place. For us it is the perfect size . Transfer from Male was a very bumpy speedboat ride then warmly greeted with refreshing drinks and cool towels . We were swiftly settled into our bungalow which was in a perfect position . A bottle of wine and bowl of fruit left for us in the room was a much appreciated touch . Abu Talib took care of the room and did a great job each day . Meal times were a highlight, always many tasty options on offer , we thoroughly enjoyed all the food choices especially the spicy curries. Our Waiter Lasanthta was superb, very attentive and informed us about the island and its wildlife . Our first few days were very peaceful and relaxing as we started to unwind …..then a group of 18 Italians arrived and the peace was shattered! Although a friendly , fun group it felt quite intrusive with the constant shouting to each other and non stop chatter . Not ideally what we wanted on a remote tranquil island break …. We were very grateful to the Manager , a lovely gentleman, who dealt with an issue that arose for us in a discreet and efficient manner . He was very helpful . All staff are friendly and helpful , it was great to see some familiar faces ( Habib) from previous trips . A special mention and thanks to KD at the Dive Centre . We enjoyed a couple of boat trips and 2 snorkelling excursions with him . Mike and I are competent swimmers and KD suggested an extra long guided snorkel around part of the reef. I think it was the furthest I’d ever swum ! It was brilliant , we saw so much . He is a fantastic guide , very calm , chilled and knowledgeable. Also has an amazing singing voice , hopefully he will be offered a recording contract someday , his voice is that good ! Swimming with the Nurse sharks at dusk was a great experience. I was concerned about doing it and needed some convincing and reassurance beforehand. So glad I did it though . I visited the Spa twice , both massages were 10 /10 . Bar guys were always cheerful and friendly and quick to replace the “ evaporated glasses” . There is a small gift shop run by Imilie who was a joy to chat with each day . A sweet soul who always made me smile 😊. Our trip was booked through Angelfish travel who have been excellent for all our visits to the Maldives . We would return to Makunudu in a heartbeat. Fantastic island , well run with delightful staff . Hope to see you all again soon 💕 Clare and Mike

Great property..!! Excellent staff..!! Had an unforgettable 1st wedding anniversary..the resort and the staff really went extra mile to make it all the more special for me and my wife...!! Special Shout out to Bhaskar, Ravini, mahadev, talib(from house keeping..made my room..not sure if I got name right), subra , though everyone were nice, met and greeted us... Being a flight crew with AirIndia we put up at the best hotels round the globe on a regular basis.. I highly recommend this place... If I really had to find a fault I would say the resort being far from the mainland the tranfer cost is exponentially high..I wish it was a little less...!! Over all loved it... Ci torneremo

Most delicious dinners we ever had in any kind if hotels/resorts. The waiters were amazing and made the experience even better. Super clean environment and comfortable, private bungalows. We were on half-board which was perfectly enough for us with having a snack during the day. The food prices were more than okay, the drinks are a bit pricy if you are not on all-inclusive.

This is a wonderful, small and intimate island. The food is outstanding. The sea is beautiful and the array of fish is incredible. We have been many times to the Maldives but we are here now and loving this gem.One point to make is that we are glad we brought jelly shoes as some of the island has very corally sand rather than the soft white powder in other islands we have visited.

What a beautiful remote island with no water villas to compromise your see view. The staff and the management were kind and professional at all times. The food was delicious during our entire stay. A big pluspoint is the PADI diving station on the island with its experienced dive instructor Claudia and her dive team and boat crew. They were simply amazing and we felt safe with them at all times under water. We definitely will be back for more time in paradise.

We have just returned from a fabulous 10 night holiday on Makunudu with friends. From my emails to the reception team before hand they took on board my requests and gave us 4 rooms together (there were 7 of us) and set up a large table in the restaurant. The manager Sunil and all his staff are delightful and did everything they could to make our holiday very memorable. The food is amazing from the breakfast and lunch buffet's to the evening set meals / BBQ's and ALL the snacks in-between. The food can not be faulted. Our waiter Ismail was wonderful, he bought fresh chillies to us at every meal, and kept up with 7 of us requesting various drinks and changes to the evening set meals. He made our Anniversary and my husbands Birthday very special with lovely table decorations. Our room housekeeper was also very attentive and made up beautiful bed decorations on our special occasions. The bar staff are all so much fun and keep the drinks flowing. Big shout out too to ALL the Dive Team, Claudia and the guys know the all the best reefs, dive sites and best snorkelling not too far away from the island. They are all very attentive and help and encourage you when you need it. We saw a Manta Ray while on one of the boat snorkel trips which was amazing, and they are hard to see even when diving !!!! We did the sunset snorkel with the nurse sharks. we went from the beach to the just off the jetty there were about 40 sharks.... It was very special. The huts we had were 31, 32, 33, 34. The space between these huts are quite narrow and we did not have a lot of beach on this side of the island. Rooms on the other side of the island , no's from 2 to 20 offer more space and more beach. The rooms are kept clean and the beds are very comfortable. The part open garden bathroom is a nice feature. The rooms need refurbishment as although adequate, they are in need of some updating, two of the huts we had were leaking water down by the electric sockets when we had really heavy rain. Makunudu was a paradise island for us all and our celebrations, we had the very best of times there. It is the perfect No News No Shoes holiday island. Another plus point is that Makunudu does NOT have water bungalows and we hope that it never will have, just an update of the rooms would be all the island needs to keep us coming back.

The speedboat transfer from Velana Airport was very efficient with minimal waiting time. On approach, the island appeared as in Robinson Crusoe, just as anticipated, with only the lush vegetation visible. The welcome from Amita was perfect: she, along with her colleague Ravini, never seemed to stop smiling the whole week! The rooms are concealed within vegetation and were clean, comfortable and very well equipped with efficient aircon, a safe, a fridge and a multi adaptor provided, though the electrical sockets are UK standard 3 rectangular pins. Our room was immaculately maintained by Abu Taub and, like others, provided a choice of relaxing in either shade or on the white coral beach. The AI package worked well. Food was a mixture of buffet and a la carte with the former offering a huge choice and featuring excellent curries, fish, meat and vegetarian options. We were served attentively by Anwar, Susil, Milan and Habib. Snorkelling was very safe and enjoyable with a huge variety of colourful fish; also turtles, rays, black tip reef sharks and much larger nurse sharks, which gather 'en masse' at dusk at the end of the pier. A recent bleaching event has sadly killed some of the coral but has left plenty intact. Further entertainment was provided by the nesting black naped terns aggressively defending their randomly laid eggs, by the ultra tame waterhens, by the noisy Asian koels which call day and night and by the very large and visible fruit bats. It was possible to walk round the island in 20 minutes, during which it is notable that the staff accommodation, the spa, badminton court and table tennis table are all discreetly hidden among the lush vegetation. Can anything detract from this paradise? Only, in our experience, the succession of seaplanes returning to Male from the outlying atolls. Such a shame that they cannot be routed over the ocean rather than the island. Overall a brilliant, unforgettable experience which we will repeat at the first opportunity. Our thanks to everyone at Makunudu who made it so and especially Tharanga, who diligently answered a variety of pre-holiday queries and proved to be excellent company subsequently. We'll see you all again soon!

It was my dream to go to Maldives... My stay in Makunudu started really well, we felt very welcome, the staff was extremely kind, specially in the restaurant and bar. Lasante was very gently and always with a smile. The rooms are exactly like in the pictures, no disappointment. We have a great time... the island is rather small but perfect to disconnect. Unfortunately towards the end of our stay something very strange and annoying happened: our mobiles phone's WERE STOLEN FROM OUR ROOM! yes as crazy as its sounds, in a island with only 20 guests, very luxurious and beautiful of 2 iPhone got stolen...and that when we felt not not happy. We did talked to the manager, Sunil, he did the correct thing to advice the police, but no one was in the end responsible for our loss, not the police gave us the report we requested for the insurance.... the left us with a Sauer taste of this beautiful place... not event a compensation of any kind for being stolen in a 5 start hotel for a value of almost 2000 Dollars. I am extremely disappointed.
