Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Gangehi Island Resort?

Accepted Answer

Gangehi Island Resort is located on the outskirts of North Ari Atoll. The only transfer option is a 25-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport, operating between 09:00 and 15:30. No speedboat alternative exists from Male — the distance makes a speedboat impractical. Guests must contact the resort at least 72 hours before arrival with their flight details. The seaplane fee is paid at checkout. Guests arriving or departing outside seaplane hours must book a Male overnight. The resort runs one hour ahead of Male time. Tip: The 09:00-15:30 seaplane window means international flights arriving after 14:00 carry a risk of missing the last connection — build in at least a 90-minute buffer between landing at Male and the seaplane departure, and arrange a Hulhumale hotel for late-arriving nights.

Question 2

Is there a house reef and how does the island layout produce two very different environments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Gangehi Island has one of the most distinctive physical layouts of any Maldives resort — only 200m x 150m in size, bordered by a coral reef on one side (the reef side) and a broad calm lagoon on the other. The house reef is directly accessible by swimming from the reef-side beach — this is the side where guests encounter reef marine life. The lagoon side is protected and calm — a wide, flat expanse of turquoise water where dolphins and manta rays are seen and where the water sports and most relaxation activities take place. Two free guided snorkelling trips are run daily by the in-house marine biologist. The reef quality is among the best in North Ari Atoll, with turtles, reef sharks and dense tropical fish populations. The resort is also within striking distance of Rasdhoo — one of the few places in the Maldives where hammerhead sharks are regularly encountered. Tip: Ask the marine biologist guide to take you to the specific reef section between the island and the sandbank — this stretch of reef is producing the most consistent marine life activity and is the focal point of the daily guided snorkelling excursions.

Question 3

Which villa types do guests most mention and what is the island feel?

Accepted Answer

45 rooms across four categories on a tiny 200m x 150m island. Garden Villas (3 units): set in the island's tropical vegetation with private sit-outs and easy beach access — the most secluded accommodation on the island. Beach Villas (20 units): directly on the sand with shady verandas surrounded by tropical greenery and most with direct beach access — praised for the natural shade and the authentic Maldivian beach atmosphere. Overwater Villas (8 units): sunset-facing, positioned above the lagoon with large wooden terraces and direct water access — the newly refurbished category, warmly decorated with precious wood and described as luxurious by returning those who have stayed there multiple times. Deluxe Overwater Villas (8 units): the premium overwater category, larger with exquisite furnishings, a private sundeck and stunning sunset and lagoon views. The tiny island creates an atmosphere that some as the most intimate and private they have experienced in the Maldives — on a busy island, guests rarely encounter more than a handful of people at once. Tip: Book a sunset-facing Overwater or Deluxe Overwater Villa and request the west-facing position — these villas produce the most photographed view at Gangehi: a wide, calm lagoon turning golden at sunset across to the horizon, described by returning guests (some visiting eight times) as unforgettable.

Question 4

What is the diving programme and what sites are accessible?

Accepted Answer

The PADI and SSI certified dual-accreditation dive centre is one of the most comprehensive dive operations for a resort of this scale. The multilingual team offers courses from beginner to advanced level, including Enriched Air Diver (Nitrox) certification. Equipment hire covers a full set including dive computers and underwater cameras. Gangehi's North Ari Atoll location provides access to numerous diverse dive sites — from coral bommies and overhangs to wall dives and shallow reef gardens. The nearby Rasdhoo Atoll to the east is home to one of the few hammerhead shark dive sites in the Maldives — an exceptional excursion from the resort. Manta ray encounters are available in the lagoon and on organised excursions. Two free guided snorkelling trips are included daily by the marine biologist. Tip: Book the Rasdhoo hammerhead shark excursion early in the stay — this is one of the most extraordinary dive experiences accessible from any resort in the Maldives and requires specific conditions and timing. The dive team can advise on the optimal day and current conditions to maximise the encounter probability.

Question 5

What activities are available?

Accepted Answer

Included: canoes at no charge (cited as complimentary), two daily free guided snorkel trips, daily open-air yoga sessions, free Wi-Fi in all villas. Charged: scuba diving (courses and guided dives), jet skiing, kayaking beyond canoe use, dolphin watching, fishing, sandbank excursions, sunset fishing trips. Evening: nightly film projection (a regular scheduled event), live music and karaoke on selected evenings. The Ginger Spa offers Ayurvedic and traditional massage treatments, facials and body therapies in a setting designed for spiritual and meditative wellbeing. A gym is available. A sandbank stretches from the bar and lounge area into the lagoon — fine white sand ideal for sunbathing, bocce and walking out to the house reef entry point. Tip: Use the canoes to paddle around the perimeter of the island — the tiny 200m x 150m footprint makes a complete circuit take just 10-15 minutes, and the transition between the reef side and the lagoon side visible from the water level is one of the most atmospheric ways to understand the island's unique dual character.

Question 6

What is the natural sandbank and how is it used?

Accepted Answer

A natural white sandbank extends from the bar and lounge area into the lagoon on the lagoon side of the island. This sandbank is a permanent feature (not a tidal sandbar that disappears at high tide) — it is the social focal point of the island for sunbathing, bocce, group activities and walking out toward the reef entry. Guests wade from the island across the sandbank to reach the house reef for snorkelling. The sandbank is also used for private dining setups on the sand, making it one of the most distinctive in-lagoon dining positions in North Ari Atoll. It is a prominent and consistent feature as a reason they love the island's character. Tip: Walk to the end of the sandbank at low tide for the widest lagoon perspective and the closest foot-accessible approach to the reef — this walk-out experience at dawn with no other guests around is repeatedly described as one of the most memorable quiet moments at the resort.

Question 7

How is the Wi-Fi and what practical things should guests know?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available in all villas and the resort. North Ari Atoll is more remote than North Male Atoll, and satellite-based connectivity is slower. The connection supports messaging and standard browsing. The tiny island (200m x 150m) means walking everywhere takes just a few minutes — no buggies or bicycles are needed. The seaplane is the only way to reach the island — no alternative transport exists. The seaplane fee is paid at resort checkout rather than upfront. The resort clock runs one hour ahead of Male time — guests should adjust watches on arrival to avoid missing meals or excursion departures. Tip: Reset your watch to resort time immediately on arrival — the one-hour-ahead clock affects all meal times, activity schedules and excursion departures, and missing this adjustment on the first day typically results in at least one missed activity or late breakfast sitting.

Question 8

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children of all ages are welcome. Free cribs are available. A kids club and babysitting services are available. A shallow pool section caters to young children. The tiny island and intimate atmosphere make Gangehi particularly well suited for families who want a quiet, uncrowded environment — the 45-room scale means children are unlikely to encounter crowding anywhere on the island. The all-inclusive format is family-convenient, eliminating per-item billing across meals and selected activities. Tip: Families with young children should take note of the intimate island scale — the 45-room maximum means the island feels personally managed rather than resort-operated, and the staff attention to children is more individual than at larger properties where children are managed as a group.

Question 9

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

North Ari Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best underwater visibility. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds, but North Ari Atoll is renowned for manta ray encounters throughout the year and hammerhead sharks at Rasdhoo are accessible in most conditions. The all-inclusive format means there is no cost advantage in visiting during quieter seasons beyond the villa rate itself. Tip: Visit between May and November if manta ray encounters in the lagoon and atoll are a specific goal — these months drive plankton activity that attracts mantas to the North Ari Atoll lagoon system, and sightings from the Gangehi lagoon side are more frequent during this period.

Question 10

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Gangehi is cited as one of the most romantic resorts in North Ari Atoll — the tiny island scale, the sunset overwater villa position, the natural sandbank and the calm lagoon create a uniquely intimate atmosphere. The miniature size of the island ensures that even at full occupancy, privacy and seclusion feel genuine. Private beach dinners, candlelit sandbank dining and in-villa setups can be arranged. The Deluxe Overwater Villa at sunset is the most requested honeymoon accommodation. Return visit patterns — mentioning eighth visits — indicate a resort that maintains its romantic appeal across multiple stays. Tip: Book the Deluxe Overwater Villa and notify the resort of the honeymoon at booking — special in-villa setups and arrival touches are prepared in advance on this tiny island where the team has the capacity to know every guest personally.

Question 11

What are the main pros of staying at Gangehi Island Resort?

Accepted Answer

Tiny 200m x 150m island with 45 rooms: the most intimate resort scale in North Ari Atoll — privacy and personal service as a structural feature rather than a promise. Dual character — reef side and lagoon side: two completely different marine and beach environments within metres of each other on the same small island. Daily free guided snorkel trips by the resident marine biologist: included in the all-inclusive plan and run twice a day — a substantive marine access inclusion rare at this price point. Rasdhoo hammerhead sharks nearby: accessible as a dive excursion — one of the very few locations in the Maldives where hammerhead encounters are achievable. Sunset overwater villas: the most-cited accommodation at the resort, producing the sunset lagoon views that returning across eight or more visits. All-inclusive with complimentary canoes: no per-activity charges for basic water access. Strong repeat-visit base: guests returning up to eight times is a reliable indicator of sustained quality delivery across multiple seasons. Tip: Gangehi is seaplane-only with no alternative transfer — guests arriving on evening international flights must plan a Male overnight as a hard requirement. This is a practical consideration that affects the total trip budget and should be accounted for when comparing against speedboat-access resorts.

Question 12

How does Gangehi compare to other North Ari Atoll resorts?

Accepted Answer

North Ari Atoll has a significant number of resorts from 3-star to ultra-luxury. Gangehi is positioned as a small luxury all-inclusive resort with exceptional reef access and a uniquely intimate 45-room scale. Its primary differentiators in the atoll are the dual character of the island (reef wall on one side, broad lagoon on the other), the proximity to Rasdhoo hammerhead sharks, the complimentary daily marine biologist snorkel tours and the all-inclusive format. It is specifically well-suited to divers, snorkellers and couples who want a genuinely small-island experience rather than a resort-campus feel. Tip: Guests comparing Gangehi to larger North Ari Atoll resorts should note that the tiny 200m x 150m footprint is what produces the privacy and intimacy — those who want extensive on-island facilities or multiple restaurant choices should choose a larger property, while those who want the most personal island experience possible should book Gangehi.
