Question 1

How do I get from the airport to COMO Cocoa Island?

Accepted Answer

COMO Cocoa Island is located on Makunufushi Island in South Male Atoll, 30 km from Velana International Airport. The transfer is a 40-minute speedboat, operating 24 hours a day with no daylight restrictions. The resort has a representative in the arrivals hall who meets guests and escorts them to the jetty. Flight details must be shared with the resort at least 3 days before arrival. As all accommodation is overwater on wooden jetties, there are no bicycles or vehicles on the island — guests travel entirely on foot from the moment of arrival. Tip: The all-on-foot policy begins at the jetty — wear comfortable footwear for arrival and note that the island is small enough to walk across in under 10 minutes, so this is a genuine feature rather than an inconvenience.

Question 2

Is there a house reef for snorkelling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. COMO Cocoa Island has two house reefs and the snorkelling is consistently recognised as the standout feature of the resort. All 33 overwater villas have direct steps into the water, and the house reef is accessible immediately from the villa or from the beach. The resort's eastern side provides the best conditions for direct snorkelling access from the reef wall. Marine life includes reef sharks (seen multiple times daily by most guests), turtles, rays, manta rays, octopus and dense schools of tropical fish. A complimentary introductory snorkelling session with a guide is available. Extended private guided reef tours are available at a nominal additional cost. The COMO team conducts marine biologist-led reef talks that are complimentary and inform guests about the coral restoration programme. Tip: Enter the water at the eastern end of the jetty where the reef wall is most accessible — this is consistently identified as the most productive snorkelling entry point at Cocoa Island, and the morning tide before other guests are in the water produces the best marine encounters.

Question 3

What room types are available?

Accepted Answer

33 overwater villas across five categories, all with direct lagoon access via private deck steps. No beach villas exist — all accommodation is overwater. Dhoni Suites (75 sqm): king or twin bed, spacious living area, sun deck with chaise lounges and direct lagoon access. Dhoni Loft Suites (110 sqm): split-level with full-length glass windows on three sides, elevated bedroom loft and direct lagoon access. Loft Villas: private sun decks with teak floors and overwater access. One-Bedroom Villas: larger layout with expanded living space. COMO Villas (two-bedroom): each approached by a private jetty with butler service and direct lagoon access on both sides. All villas feature Nespresso machines, fully stocked minibars (daily replenishment included), iPod stereos, soaking tubs, indoor showers, and COMO Shambhala bath amenities. Dhoni Loft Suites numbered from 830 onwards at the end of the jetty offer the most privacy. Tip: Request a Dhoni Loft Suite from number 830 onwards for maximum privacy — the far end of the jetty provides the most unobstructed ocean views, the least foot traffic and the greatest sense of seclusion on the island.

Question 4

How is the food?

Accepted Answer

Ufaa is the sole restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner a la carte with a menu that changes daily. The culinary approach draws from South Indian, Thai, Mediterranean and Malabar Coast influences, with a strong emphasis on fresh seafood and organic produce. A COMO Shambhala Kitchen menu of nutritionally designed, organic dishes is permanently available alongside the main menu. A Tandoor oven produces low-fat fragrant grills of meat, fish and vegetables. Three times weekly, themed menus feature Indian and Thai recipes; a seafood barbecue buffet is offered on selected days. The soufflé is a specific dish praised consistently by guests. All dining is a la carte — there is no buffet for regular meals. Free breakfast is included in the room rate. Upgrades to half-board or full-board are available. Tip: Order the soufflé at dinner — it is the most praised individual dish across multiple years of independent assessments and requires approximately 20 minutes preparation time, so order it at the start of the meal rather than as an afterthought.

Question 5

What is the COMO Shambhala Retreat?

Accepted Answer

The COMO Shambhala Retreat at Cocoa Island is the resort's wellness facility and occupies a significant portion of the island. It includes treatment rooms offering Asian-based therapies with Ayurvedic, Thai and deep-tissue massage traditions, a hydrotherapy pool (one of only a few in the Maldives), a steam room, a fitness centre, a yoga pavilion, and daily complimentary yoga and Pilates classes. The flagship Shambhala Massage is a 90-minute full-body treatment using the brand's signature technique. Spa treatments are charged separately. Complimentary wellness activities — yoga, Pilates and fitness classes — are included daily for all guests. Tip: Book the Shambhala Massage for your second or third day rather than arrival day — the 90-minute treatment produces maximum benefit when the body has had time to decompress from travel, and the hydrotherapy pool beforehand further enhances the therapeutic effect.

Question 6

What activities and excursions are available?

Accepted Answer

Complimentary: snorkelling equipment and non-motorised water sports, daily yoga and Pilates classes, complimentary introductory snorkelling session, hydrotherapy pool and steam room access, stargazing from the jetty end, access to the on-site sandbank. Charged: scuba diving (20 dive sites in the South Male Atoll area, including two house reefs), sunset cruises, deep-sea fishing, island hopping, fluorescence night snorkelling with UV torches (unique experience revealing bioluminescent coral), private sandbank dining, COMO luxury yacht charters. The UV fluorescence snorkelling experience is a unique Cocoa Island feature — UV torches and special mask lenses reveal bioluminescent colours in the coral invisible to the naked eye. Tip: Book the fluorescence snorkelling session on a night early in the stay — this is one of the most distinctive and unusual marine experiences available anywhere in the Maldives and requires calm, dark conditions that are most reliable on settled evenings.

Question 7

How is the Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. South Male Atoll is relatively close to Male, providing generally reliable satellite connectivity. The connection supports messaging, video calls and standard browsing. As a small island with 33 villas, the network is not under heavy usage pressure that would degrade speeds. Tip: South Male Atoll proximity to Male makes COMO Cocoa Island one of the more reliable connectivity options for those who need consistent internet access — more reliable than remote atoll resorts while still providing genuine island seclusion.

Question 8

What makes COMO Cocoa Island different from other Maldives resorts?

Accepted Answer

COMO Cocoa Island has all 33 villas built in the shape of traditional Maldivian dhoni fishing boats — a design concept not replicated at any other Maldives resort. The island is small enough to walk across in under 10 minutes, creating an intimacy and sense of personal space that is rare at larger resorts. All accommodation is overwater — there are no beach villas, no roads, no bikes and no vehicles of any kind. The COMO Shambhala Retreat includes a hydrotherapy pool, which is one of only a few in the Maldives. The resort was built in the 1980s and has over 40 years of operational history in the Maldives. The fluorescence snorkelling experience and marine biologist-led reef programmes are distinctive activities found at very few Maldives properties. The coral restoration programme run by the COMO team is an active and guest-participatory conservation initiative. Tip: The dhoni-shaped villa architecture is unique in the Maldives — no other resort has replicated this concept. The soft curves of the villa exteriors and the bleached wood and kajan roof construction are immediately recognisable and are what guests cite most when describing what makes Cocoa Island visually distinctive.

Question 9

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children are welcome but the resort is not specifically designed for families with young children. As all accommodation is overwater, there are no beach-level rooms for young children who need beach access. Children under 2 travel free on the speedboat. The COMO Villa (two-bedroom) is the most practical accommodation for families. There are no dedicated children's facilities, no kids club and no dedicated children's pool. Families who want overwater accommodation for adults with young children should discuss the specific villa layout and safety features with the resort before booking. Tip: Families with children under 5 should discuss the villa deck safety arrangements with the resort before booking — all villas are overwater with direct lagoon access, and the deck layout and railing configurations vary by villa category.

Question 10

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. COMO Cocoa Island is one of the most consistently recommended honeymoon resorts in the Maldives. The intimate 33-villa scale, all-overwater accommodation, exceptional house reef and understated luxury create a distinctly romantic atmosphere. Honeymooners with a valid marriage certificate dated within six months receive complimentary honeymoon inclusions. The COMO Shambhala Retreat with its couple treatment rooms, hydrotherapy pool and yoga sessions provides a comprehensive wellness dimension. The daily-changing a la carte menu at Ufaa and the option for private villa dining add romantic dining flexibility. The fluorescence snorkelling experience and private sandbank dinner are the two most requested special honeymoon activities. Tip: Present your marriage certificate at check-in to activate the complimentary honeymoon benefits — the certificate must be dated within 6 months and must be the original or certified copy. Inform the resort of your honeymoon at booking to ensure the team is prepared for your arrival.

Question 11

What is the best time to visit?

Accepted Answer

South Male Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry season from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best underwater visibility. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds but also lower rates, fewer guests and the conditions that attract manta rays to the nearby Vaavu Atoll. The resort is small enough that even in peak season it never feels crowded, and the house reef is accessible at any time of year. Maintenance at the arrival jetty is scheduled from April to July 2026. Tip: January and February are peak season with the best conditions — book 4-6 months ahead for Christmas and New Year, which is the single busiest window at Cocoa Island. November and March offer excellent conditions with lower occupancy than the peak holiday weeks.

Question 12

What are the main pros of staying at COMO Cocoa Island?

Accepted Answer

Exceptional house reef: directly accessible from all villa steps, with reef sharks seen multiple times daily, turtles, rays and strong coral recovery under COMO's active restoration programme. Unique dhoni-shaped villas: 33 architecturally distinctive overwater villas in a boat-inspired form found nowhere else in the Maldives. All accommodation overwater: the entire resort is suspended over the lagoon — there is no beach villa category and no compromise on the overwater experience. Hydrotherapy pool: one of only a few in the Maldives, paired with the full COMO Shambhala Retreat wellness programme. Fluorescence snorkelling: a unique UV coral light experience available at very few Maldives resorts. Marine biologist-led reef talks: complimentary and genuinely educational, underpinned by COMO's active coral restoration programme. All-inclusive breakfast: free breakfast in the room rate for all guests, with half-board and full-board upgrades available. Intimate 33-villa scale: the resort rarely feels crowded and the small size produces personalised service consistently recognised as exceptional. 40-minute 24-hour speedboat: no seaplane required, no daylight restriction. Tip: COMO Cocoa Island is positioned at a premium price point with a la carte dining rather than all-inclusive — food and drink costs can accumulate significantly for those who dine at the restaurant for all meals and order liberally from the bar. Calculate the full-board rate against the room-only rate before choosing a meal plan.

Question 13

What is the dining and pricing structure at COMO Cocoa Island?

Accepted Answer

COMO Cocoa Island operates on an a la carte dining model rather than all-inclusive or buffet. Breakfast is included in the room rate for all guests. Lunch and dinner are charged separately at Ufaa restaurant unless guests upgrade to half-board (breakfast and dinner) or full-board (all three meals). The menu changes daily and features South Indian, Thai, Mediterranean and Maldivian cuisine alongside a permanent COMO Shambhala Cuisine wellness menu. There is no second restaurant — Ufaa is the sole dining venue on the island. Faru Bar serves poolside and beachside drinks and light fare. In-villa dining is available for room service meals. Food and drink costs can accumulate significantly for guests dining freely without a meal plan — half-board or full-board upgrades are worth calculating against the room-only rate before booking. Tip: Half-board is the most popular meal plan upgrade at Cocoa Island — breakfast is already included, and adding dinner at Ufaa removes the daily billing anxiety for the most significant a la carte spend of the day.

Question 14

Is the resort suitable for non-swimmers or guests who prefer not to snorkel?

Accepted Answer

Yes. While the house reef and snorkelling are the primary draws for most guests, COMO Cocoa Island works well for those who prefer land-based activity or relaxation. The infinity pool is positioned on the beach with excellent lagoon views. The COMO Shambhala Retreat offers daily complimentary yoga and Pilates classes, a hydrotherapy pool, steam room and full treatment menu. The a la carte restaurant Ufaa changes its menu daily, providing consistent dining variety. The sandbank adjacent to the island is accessible without a boat trip. The private villa deck with direct lagoon access provides a tranquil outdoor space independent of the reef. Tip: Non-swimmers who want the overwater villa experience will find the villa deck, the daily yoga sessions and the hydrotherapy pool a satisfying combination — the reef is an optional addition rather than the only reason to visit Cocoa Island.

COMO Cocoa Island
