Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Bandos Maldives?

Accepted Answer

Bandos is located in North Male Atoll, 8 km from Velana International Airport. The transfer is a 10-15 minute speedboat ride. No seaplane is required and there are no daylight restrictions. Guests are met at a numbered kiosk after clearing customs and led to the speedboat with their luggage. The return transfer costs approximately USD 95 per person. The speedboat does not typically serve cold towels or bottled water during the short transfer. The proximity to Male means a city day trip is feasible during the stay. Tip: The speedboat transfer can be choppy in windy conditions — pack any motion sickness medication in hand luggage rather than checked bags if you are susceptible, as the ride is short but the swell can be significant during the wet season.

Question 2

Is there a house reef and how is the snorkelling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Bandos has a well-regarded house reef accessible from the beach at two main entry points. The reef drops off approximately 50 metres from the shore into deeper water. Marine life includes blacktip reef sharks, nurse sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, turtles, octopus, moray eels and large schools of reef fish including butterflyfish, surgeonfish and angelfish. The reef is one of the best house reefs in North Male Atoll for diversity and accessibility. Snorkelling gear is available for rent — bringing your own mask and fins is recommended by guests for a better fit. Some coral bleaching has occurred across the reef, consistent with the wider Maldives. Tip: Bring your own snorkel mask and fins if you intend to snorkel daily — rental equipment on the island varies in fit and quality, and personally owned gear makes extended daily snorkel sessions significantly more comfortable.

Question 3

What room types are available?

Accepted Answer

Bandos has 250 rooms across six categories. Standard Rooms and Deluxe Rooms are the entry-level options. Garden Villas are standalone bungalows surrounded by tropical vegetation — these may experience seaplane noise from overhead aircraft. Beach Villas are standalone with direct beach access and are recommended for privacy, as they are not attached to other units. Jacuzzi Beach Villas are two-storey units on the south side with a private Jacuzzi and easy beach access. Beach Pool Villas have a private infinity pool. Two Water Villas are located on the southwest side of the island on stilts over the lagoon with open-air showers, modern interiors and a private sun deck. Rooms are serviced twice daily. Tip: Request a Beach Villa in the 211+ range if quiet is a priority — rooms in the 203 range are closer to the main dock and receive noise from regular boat traffic and jet activity from the nearby Male airport.

Question 4

What dining options and meal plans are available?

Accepted Answer

Four restaurants and multiple bars are on the island. The Gallery is the main restaurant serving a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner — this is the only venue included under full-board and all-inclusive plans, and operates without air conditioning. Koon Thai serves Thai cuisine indoors and outdoors. Sea Breeze is near the water with Italian and Indian food. Huvan is a poolside restaurant. The all-inclusive plan covers meals at The Gallery and selected drinks. Food variety at The Gallery has been noted as adequate but not exceptional. Guests on bed-and-breakfast can dine at specialty restaurants a la carte. Vegetarian, dairy-free and halal options are available. Tip: Book specialty restaurants for at least two evenings during your stay — dining exclusively at The Gallery buffet for a week on an all-inclusive plan can feel repetitive, and Koon Thai in particular is consistently praised for quality.

Question 5

What diving and water sports are available?

Accepted Answer

The Bandos Dive School is a PADI 5-star Gold Centre with over 40 world-class dive sites accessible within the North Male Atoll. The dive centre is large and well-equipped with audio-visual teaching facilities, an air-conditioned classroom and a wide equipment library. PADI courses range from beginner to rebreather level, and children's diving is available. Water sports include snorkelling, canoeing, windsurfing, glass-bottom boat tours and various motorised and non-motorised options. Surf breaks are accessible by boat in the area. A dedicated swimming pool with a swim-up bar is available for non-divers. Tip: Book dive courses in advance — the Bandos dive school is one of the most comprehensive operations in North Male Atoll and popular course slots fill up, particularly during peak season.

Question 6

What is the island like in terms of size and atmosphere?

Accepted Answer

Bandos is a relatively large island accommodating up to 500 guests at full occupancy, making it one of the larger resorts in North Male Atoll. The atmosphere is active and social rather than secluded and intimate. The island is round in shape and can be circumnavigated on the beach. One side of the island faces Male city and experiences views of boats and city activity, reducing the sense of complete seclusion. The beach is narrow in most areas. Day-trippers can pay to use the resort facilities, which can add to the island population on busy days. The resort has been operating since 1972, making it one of the oldest in the Maldives. Tip: For the most secluded beach experience, stay on the east side of the island and visit in the early morning before day-trippers arrive — the beach population increases significantly during the middle of the day.

Question 7

What is the kids club and family offering?

Accepted Answer

The kids club operates with a programme of activities for children. The swimming pool is popular with families and can become busy. Bandos is generally considered one of the better family resorts in North Male Atoll due to its large size, diverse activities and relatively short transfer from the airport. The island is large enough for children to explore and the beaches are easily accessible. The dive centre offers children's PADI diving courses. Tip: Arrive early to the pool area to secure loungers in shaded positions — the pool is a focal point of the resort and fills up quickly, particularly with families, during the midday hours.

Question 8

How is the spa?

Accepted Answer

The Orchid Spa offers body treatments, salon services, Thai massage, aromatherapy, facials and a jacuzzi. Spa sessions are popular during the midday sun when guests prefer to stay indoors, so booking morning or late afternoon slots reduces waiting time. The spa is noted for consistent quality in body treatments and Thai massage. Tip: Book spa treatments for late afternoon when the snorkelling and beach conditions are typically less ideal — the morning and late morning are best used for reef activities when visibility and sea conditions are at their peak.

Question 9

What is the noise environment like?

Accepted Answer

Bandos is 8 km from Velana International Airport, which is close enough for aircraft noise to be audible, particularly in garden villas where the sound carries more. Boat traffic at the main dock and speedboat departures create regular noise near the front of the resort. The north side of the island can experience rough seas and reduced beach sand. Guests sensitive to noise are advised to request villas in the 211+ range on the quieter side of the island away from the dock. Tip: Specify in writing at booking that you want a room away from the dock and the flight path overhead — the resort team can assign villa positions based on these preferences when given advance notice.

Question 10

How is the Wi-Fi?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. North Male Atoll's proximity to Male — just 8 km — means stronger and more reliable satellite connectivity than at remote atolls. The connection generally supports messaging, browsing and light video use. The close location to the capital also means a local SIM card purchased at the airport provides excellent signal throughout the stay. Tip: If reliable connectivity is important for remote work or streaming, Bandos is one of the more practical Maldives options due to its proximity to Male — connectivity is consistently faster than at atolls 200+ km south.

Question 11

What excursions are available?

Accepted Answer

Available excursions include whale shark snorkelling tours (not guaranteed — the dedicated whale shark zones are in South Ari Atoll and require a longer boat trip), manta ray excursions, dolphin watching, sunset cruises, glass-bottom boat tours, fishing, local island visits and sandbank picnics. The turtle snorkelling tour is available but experienced snorkellers report greater value from simply exploring the house reef independently. All excursions are charged at additional cost beyond the meal plan. Tip: Experienced snorkellers report the house reef independently offers more marine diversity than the turtle snorkelling excursion — save the excursion budget for the dolphin cruise or a fishing trip, which offer experiences not available from the beach.

Question 12

What is the all-inclusive plan and is it worth it?

Accepted Answer

The all-inclusive plan covers all meals at The Gallery buffet restaurant, selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and access to resort facilities. Specialty restaurants (Koon Thai, Sea Breeze, Huvan) carry additional charges under the AI plan. Guests on bed-and-breakfast have the flexibility to eat a la carte at all restaurants. The price of food and beverages at Bandos is considered reasonable relative to other Maldives resorts — a beer is approximately USD 4, which compares favourably to other North Male Atoll properties. The AI plan requires assessment against how much time you plan to spend at The Gallery versus specialty venues. Tip: Compare the cost differential between bed-and-breakfast and all-inclusive before booking — if you plan to use specialty restaurants often, bed-and-breakfast with a la carte dining at Koon Thai may produce better value than an AI plan that restricts you to The Gallery for included meals.

Question 13

What are the main pros of staying at Bandos Maldives?

Accepted Answer

10-minute speedboat transfer: no seaplane, no daylight restrictions, no lengthy transit — the shortest transfer of any comparable resort in North Male Atoll. One of the best house reefs in North Male Atoll: accessible from shore, packed with sharks, rays, turtles and diverse reef fish. PADI 5-star Gold Dive Centre: one of the most comprehensive dive operations in the area, from beginner to rebreather level. Low transfer cost: no USD 450-500+ seaplane fee, making it significantly more accessible for families or couples on a budget. City day-trip feasibility: Male is 8 km away and accessible for a half-day visit without significant time or cost. Long-established resort since 1972: experienced management and a familiar, well-run operation. Food and drink value: prices are among the most reasonable in the Maldives luxury segment. Large resort scale: more facilities and dining options than smaller boutique properties at a similar or lower price point. Children's diving: PADI courses specifically for young divers — not available at all Maldives dive centres. Tip: Bandos does not offer overwater villas in any volume — the two Water Villas are the only option and are very rarely available. If overwater accommodation is a priority, Bandos is not the right resort.

Question 14

Is there a swimming pool and what are the entertainment options?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A freshwater swimming pool with a swim-up bar is available and is popular with both adults and children. Evening entertainment rotates through live music, DJ nights and cultural performances. An open-air cinema operates on selected evenings. Table tennis, tennis courts and beach volleyball are available for daytime activities. Karaoke is offered on specific evenings. The entertainment programme makes Bandos one of the more active evening resorts in North Male Atoll. Tip: Check the weekly entertainment schedule on arrival and plan restaurant bookings around scheduled live music and cultural evenings — the pool bar entertainment is best experienced when dining at a nearby restaurant rather than planning to be in the villa.

Question 15

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

North Male Atoll has two primary seasons. The dry season from November to April brings the calmest conditions, clearest skies and best underwater visibility — this is peak season with highest prices. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds but also lower rates and fewer guests. Bandos is accessible year-round with no daylight transfer restrictions, meaning late arrivals from flights landing after sunset are accommodated without additional overnight stops. Tip: The quietest and best-value period at Bandos is May to June — the wet season has begun but the heavy rains typically arrive later, offering good conditions at significantly lower rates than the December to April peak.
