Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Diamonds Athuruga?

Accepted Answer

Diamonds Athuruga is located on Athuruga Island in South Ari Atoll, approximately 20-30 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport. The seaplane lands on a floating jetty offshore — because of the house reef's proximity to the island, the seaplane cannot land at the island jetty directly. Guests disembark at the floating platform and are transferred by boat to the resort's arrivals dock. A resort representative greets guests at the floating platform. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only. Flight details must be shared at least 48 hours before arrival. Guests arriving outside seaplane hours need to arrange a Male overnight. Tip: The seaplane landing on a floating platform offshore is a distinctive arrival experience — the short boat ride from the platform to the island across the turquoise lagoon is considered by many guests to be one of the most atmospheric resort arrivals in the Maldives.

Question 2

Is the resort all-inclusive and what does it include?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Diamonds Athuruga operates exclusively on an all-inclusive basis. The plan covers all meals at the main restaurant, all alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including beer and wine in the minibar, non-motorised water sports and snorkelling equipment. Three specialty restaurants — Farivalhu Maldivian, Thila Japanese and Kakuni Seafood — carry additional charges for all guests. The Boli Beach Bar serves light meals and snacks at no charge. Minibars in beach bungalows contain only soft drinks; water villas have full minibar access with alcohol included. Free Wi-Fi is provided only in water villas and the main bar — beach bungalow guests do not have in-room Wi-Fi and must visit the reception area for connectivity. Tip: If Wi-Fi access in your room is important, book a water villa rather than a beach bungalow — the free Wi-Fi is not included in beach bungalow rooms, which is an unusual and important practical difference between the two villa categories at this resort.

Question 3

Is there a house reef and how is the snorkelling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The house reef at Diamonds Athuruga is consistently recognised as one of the best in South Ari Atoll and among the finest at any Maldives resort. The reef surrounds the island closely — the proximity is so significant that the seaplane must land offshore rather than at the island jetty to avoid disrupting it. Marine life includes nurse sharks visible from the jetty in the evenings, blacktip reef sharks, turtles, eagle rays, manta rays (seasonal), whale sharks (year-round in South Ari Atoll) and approximately 100 species of reef fish observable in a single snorkel session. The reef in front of villa 21 is noted as particularly dense with marine life. A resident marine biologist leads guided snorkel sessions and educational reef talks. Coral condition is noted as healthier than at some comparable resorts. Tip: The reef in front of water villa 21 is the most consistently praised snorkelling spot at the resort — if requesting villa 21 is not possible, ask the marine biologist team which current section of the reef has the highest activity during your stay.

Question 4

What room types are available?

Accepted Answer

70 villas across four main categories, all in a distinctive white-themed Italian design aesthetic. Beach Front Villas (40 units): beachfront with private deck veranda, outdoor bathroom with double sink and open-air shower, direct beach access, iPod docking station, satellite TV. Beach Front Junior Suites (3 units): larger beach category with more interior space. Water Villas with Pool (25 units): overwater on stilts with a private plunge pool, free Wi-Fi, full minibar including alcohol, iMac with movies and music, steps directly into the lagoon. Two-Bedroom Water Pool Villas (2 units): largest overwater category, suitable for families or groups, with free cribs available. No central swimming pool exists at the resort. Tip: The Two-Bedroom Water Pool Villa is one of only 2 units — book this category as far in advance as possible if it suits your group, as it is the only overwater family configuration and has extremely limited availability year-round.

Question 5

How is the food and what dining options are available?

Accepted Answer

Five dining venues serve the island. The main restaurant serves buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with rotating international cuisine. Three specialty restaurants are available at additional charge: Farivalhu (Maldivian), Thila (Japanese) and Kakuni (seafood). The Boli Beach Bar provides complimentary light meals and snacks throughout the day. Food quality and freshness are consistently praised, with the seafood and Italian-influenced preparations receiving particular mention. Some guests on longer stays note that the buffet variety is limited after five or more nights. JRE (Jeunes Restaurateurs) European guest chefs have been introduced from December 2025, crafting exclusive gala dinners — this brings European culinary talent to the resort on a periodic basis. Tip: Budget for at least two or three specialty restaurant dinners during the stay — eating exclusively at the main buffet for a week-long visit becomes repetitive for most guests, and the Thila Japanese and Kakuni seafood restaurants provide the most meaningful dining variety.

Question 6

What diving is available and how is the South Ari Atoll access?

Accepted Answer

The iDive dive centre is PADI-certified and provides guided dives throughout South Ari Atoll. South Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives' premier dive destinations, with year-round whale shark encounters at Maamigili Corner, manta ray cleaning stations, Fish Head (one of the most celebrated dive sites in the country), numerous thilas and reef formations. The dive centre is praised for the quality and knowledge of its instructors. The 20-minute seaplane transfer means Athuruga is positioned centrally within the atoll for efficient access to multiple dive sites. Night dives are available on request. Tip: Book dive days with the iDive team from arrival day — South Ari Atoll dive sites see some boat traffic and morning departures before other resort dive boats arrive produce the best conditions and most private reef encounters.

Question 7

What is the marine biologist programme?

Accepted Answer

Diamonds Athuruga has a resident marine biologist who leads guided snorkelling sessions on the house reef and provides educational talks about the coral ecosystem, reef conservation and the marine life of South Ari Atoll. Sessions are available for non-divers and snorkellers. The marine biologist can direct guests to the most active current reef sections and explain what marine life to look for during independent snorkelling. This programme is consistent with the resort's collaboration with conservation partners and its reef preservation mission. Tip: Attend the marine biologist reef talk in the first 24 hours of arrival — the information about current reef conditions, best snorkel entry points and what species are most active immediately improves every subsequent independent snorkel session.

Question 8

What activities are available?

Accepted Answer

Included in the AI plan: non-motorised water sports (kayaking, windsurfing, paddleboarding, catamaran), snorkelling equipment, guided marine biologist reef tours. Charged: scuba diving, whale shark excursions (year-round in South Ari Atoll), manta ray excursions, big game fishing, reef casting, bottom fishing, sunset cruises, dolphin watching, night snorkelling, sandbank dinners, private beach dinners. The water sports centre is well equipped. The resort does not have a swimming pool — the lagoon is the primary swimming area. Tip: The whale shark excursion is available year-round in South Ari Atoll — book it for a morning midway through the stay rather than the first day, giving time to orient with the reef, get comfortable in the water, and then experience the whale shark encounter with maximum enjoyment.

Question 9

How is the spa and wellness offering?

Accepted Answer

The Serena Spa offers Ayurvedic massages, therapeutic treatments, body wraps and facials. The spa's speciality in Ayurvedic traditions reflects the Italian ownership's integration of Eastern wellness approaches. Spa treatments are charged separately from the all-inclusive plan. A yoga pavilion is on the island. The resort's garden setting and small island scale create a naturally tranquil wellness environment. Tip: The Ayurvedic massage is the signature treatment at Serena Spa and the most cited recommendation across independent assessments — book it for the third or fourth day of the stay when the body has fully decompressed from travel and is receptive to the deep therapeutic benefit.

Question 10

How is the Wi-Fi and practical amenities?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available in water villas and the main bar only. Beach bungalow guests do not have in-room Wi-Fi. The resort time runs one hour ahead of Male time. No swimming pool is available anywhere on the resort — the lagoon and villa plunge pools serve all swimming needs. Restaurants and tables are assigned by room type and room number, which determines which restaurant guests dine at during the stay. The island is small and walkable without requiring transport. UK-style plugs are not standard — guests from the UK should bring an adapter. Tip: If working remotely or needing consistent Wi-Fi during the stay, book a water villa rather than a beach bungalow — the in-room Wi-Fi difference between the two categories is a meaningful practical distinction that is easy to overlook when booking.

Question 11

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children of all ages are welcome. Free cribs and infant beds are available in all villa categories. Children aged 18 and above are charged as adults. No central swimming pool is available for children. The beach is wide with a shallow lagoon suitable for young swimmers. Two-bedroom water pool villas accommodate families in the overwater category. The resort is more suited to couples than families — no kids club operates. Families with young children who need structured activities and pool access should note these limitations before booking. Tip: Families with children who need a kids club or a swimming pool should carefully assess whether Diamonds Athuruga suits their needs — the resort has no kids club and no central pool, making it best suited for families with older children who are confident in the ocean and interested in snorkelling.

Question 12

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Diamonds Athuruga is consistently positioned as and honeymoon resort. The Italian-owned white design aesthetic creates a clean, romantic visual environment. Water villas with private plunge pools, direct lagoon access and reef views are the standard honeymoon accommodation. The exceptional house reef enables spontaneous shared snorkelling experiences from the villa steps at any time. Special anniversary and honeymoon celebrations — cakes, room decoration and special dinners — are arranged with advance notice. The 25th wedding anniversary celebration described in independent assessments (cake, special dinner and room decoration with flowers) illustrates the resort's attentiveness to celebration requests. Tip: Inform the resort of the honeymoon or anniversary event at booking stage — the small team is highly responsive to celebration requests and the combination of a villa-step reef encounter with a private pool and an evening celebration dinner is what makes Athuruga a particularly memorable romantic destination.

Question 13

What are the main pros of staying at Diamonds Athuruga?

Accepted Answer

One of the best house reefs in South Ari Atoll: the reef is so close it prevents the seaplane from landing at the island jetty — a reef that is genuinely exceptional by any Maldives standard. Year-round whale sharks: South Ari Atoll positioning gives access to Maamigili Corner whale shark encounters in every month. Resident marine biologist: guided reef sessions and coral ecosystem education add depth to the snorkelling experience. Italian white design aesthetic: distinctive, clean and romantic villa design that stands apart from standard Maldivian architecture. iDive PADI dive centre: consistently praised instructors with access to Fish Head, manta ray stations and the best South Ari Atoll sites. All-inclusive with full minibar (water villas): beer and wine in the minibar included under the AI plan for water villa guests. JRE guest chef gala dinners from December 2025: European culinary talent brought to the island periodically. Small 70-villa island: personal service at a scale where staff know individual guests across the stay. Floating seaplane platform arrival: a distinctive and atmospheric resort arrival experience found nowhere else. Tip: Diamonds Athuruga has no swimming pool and beach bungalow guests have no in-room Wi-Fi — both are meaningful practical considerations that distinguish it from more comprehensive resort offerings. The primary reasons to choose Athuruga are the exceptional house reef, the whale shark access and the Italian design quality, not the amenity breadth.

Question 14

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

South Ari Atoll has two seasons. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April delivers the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best underwater visibility for snorkelling and diving. The southwest monsoon from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger seas, but South Ari Atoll has year-round resident whale sharks — the single most significant advantage of this atoll regardless of season. Manta ray encounters at cleaning stations are more frequent from May to November. The resort operates year-round with no seasonal closures. Tip: South Ari Atoll's year-round whale shark presence means no single season is definitively better for marine encounters — January and February offer the best weather and visibility while retaining excellent whale shark probability, making these months a strong choice for first-time Maldives visitors.

Question 15

What is the atmosphere and guest demographic?

Accepted Answer

Diamonds Athuruga is part of the Italian-owned Planhotel group and has a strong European, particularly Italian, guest demographic. The white-themed Italian design aesthetic — minimal, clean and romantic — reflects this ownership. The resort is primarily positioned for couples and honeymooners rather than families. A small 70-villa scale means the island never feels crowded and the atmosphere is consistently quiet and intimate. Multiple the island as among the most romantic in the Maldives. The resort attracts a high proportion of returning guests, particularly couples who return for anniversary celebrations. Tip: The Italian cultural influence is most evident in the food, the design sensibility and the celebratory attentiveness to honeymooners and anniversaries — those who appreciate the European concept of slow, gracious hospitality will find Athuruga better aligned with their expectations than larger, more activity-focused resorts.

Question 16

What are the practical things to know before booking?

Accepted Answer

No swimming pool exists at the resort — the lagoon and water villa plunge pools are the only options. Beach bungalow guests have no in-room Wi-Fi — only water villas and the main bar provide free connectivity. The seaplane lands on a floating platform offshore due to the house reef proximity — the short boat ride to the island is part of the arrival experience. Restaurant and table assignments are based on room type and number, which determines where guests dine throughout the stay. Minibars in beach bungalows contain only soft drinks; full alcohol-inclusive minibars are in water villas only. Specialty restaurants (Farivalhu, Thila, Kakuni) carry additional charges for all guests. Tip: Confirm your table and restaurant assignment when checking in — the system of fixed dining assignments by room type means knowing your designated restaurant avoids confusion at mealtimes, and if a specific restaurant appeals, requesting it at check-in is the time to do so.
