Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Hotel Riu Atoll?

Accepted Answer

Hotel Riu Atoll is located on Kedhigandu Island in Dhaalu Atoll, approximately 180 km and 55 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport, or a 45-minute domestic flight to Kudahuvadhoo Airport followed by a 15-minute speedboat. The resort is compulsory to book transfers in advance for both arrival and return. A TUI or Riu representative meets guests at Male airport immediately on landing and leads them to the Riu desk, which handles domestic flight check-in and escorts guests to a cafe at the airport where lunch is provided free of charge during the wait. This paid-for airport cafe experience is praised-organised touch. The seaplane option is approximately 40 minutes and described as exhilarating — flying over turquoise water and spotting various islands below as a memorable experience. Riu Atoll and Riu Palace Maldivas share the same private island of Kedhigandu, connected by an overwater walkway more than a mile long. The walkway is beautiful but described as brutal to walk in the sun. Tip: Request to be seated at the airport cafe as soon as the Riu representative makes contact — the complimentary lunch during the domestic flight wait is a thoughtful inclusion that many guests discover only on arrival, and proactively asking about it ensures the benefit is used rather than missed during the wait.

Question 2

What is the relationship between Hotel Riu Atoll and Hotel Riu Palace Maldivas?

Accepted Answer

Hotel Riu Atoll and Hotel Riu Palace Maldivas share the private island of Kedhigandu in Dhaalu Atoll, connected by an overwater walkway more than a mile long. Both resorts operate 24-hour all-inclusive and guests at either property have access to restaurants, bars and facilities at both hotels. The walkway connecting them is beautiful but walking it in the sun is brutal — trolleys (buggies) operate between the two but wait times can occur. The main house reef is on the Atoll side — guests staying at the Palace specifically cross to the Atoll for the best reef snorkelling. Families with children should stay at Riu Atoll, which has the children's club (RiuLand) and the water sports centre. Riu Palace is the adult-oriented property with a more relaxed, chilled atmosphere. A great reef on the south-eastern point of the island is much better than the organised snorkelling tour. Tip: If snorkelling is the primary activity, choose Riu Atoll or request access to the Atoll reef even when staying at the Palace — the house reef is on the Atoll side and Palace those who do not cross to the Atoll miss the most vibrant marine life encounters. The great reef at the south-eastern point of the island is significantly better than the standard tour.

Question 3

What is the house reef like and what marine life can guests encounter?

Accepted Answer

The house reef at Riu Atoll is one of the most enthusiastically praised features by guests. it as literally like being in an aquarium — hours watching fish, colours and variety. Another describes it as a 6-8 metre deep lagoon right at the shore producing encounters with turtles, stingrays and blacktip sharks with just a few steps into the water. Baby blacktip sharks are a specific and cited daily encounter — the funniest thing as watching newly arrived guests seeing the baby blacktip sharks for the first time, before they become almost blasé after a few days. There are no corals in the technical sense but plenty of wildlife to keep guests engaged. The south-eastern point of the island has the best reef — described as much better than the snorkelling tour at USD 60 per adult. Snorkelling gear rental from the resort restricts snorkelling to a small area with essentially no life — bringing your own mask and snorkel is strongly recommended by multiple guests. Tip: Bring your own snorkel mask rather than renting from the resort — multiple warn that the resort's snorkel rental restricts guests to a small area with essentially no marine life, while bringing personal equipment allows free access to the house reef where sharks, stingrays and turtles are encountered. The south-eastern point of the island is the best snorkel spot.
