Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma?

Accepted Answer

Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives is located on Kandooma Fushi in South Male Atoll, approximately 40-45 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. No seaplane is required — the speedboat operates without daylight restrictions, making any international arrival time workable. Infants under 4 travel free. Transfers are mandatory and must be arranged by the resort — provide flight details at least 24 hours before arrival. A free transfer promotion has been available for specific stay periods — confirm current offers at booking. All transfers are settled at the resort on checkout. Tip: Provide flight details at least 24 hours before arrival rather than on the day — the resort arranges the speedboat based on the flight schedule, and late notice may result in an uncoordinated arrival. Sending details immediately after booking prevents any gap.

Question 2

What is the surfing situation and how does Kandooma Right work?

Accepted Answer

Kandooma Right is an exclusive surf break accessible only through the resort in partnership with Perfect Wave. All surfers wishing to surf Kandooma Right must book a complete Surf and Accommodation package through Perfect Wave — direct bookings for surfing are not accepted, and the resort does not permit independent surfing access to the break. This exclusivity protects the quality of the surf experience for guests. The break is suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Surf camps and lessons for beginners and children are available through the resort's surf programme. Jailbreaks surf spot is also in the vicinity of the island. A wave energy converter experiment is in partnership with the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology at Kandooma Right — one of the first such installations in the Maldives. Tip: Book the Surf and Accommodation package through Perfect Wave before arriving if surfing is a goal — no direct booking for wave access is possible at the resort, and attempting to arrange surf access after arrival is not accepted. The Perfect Wave package is the only route to Kandooma Right.

Question 3

Which villa types do guests most frequently mention?

Accepted Answer

154 villas across beach, garden and overwater categories. Garden Villas (48 sqm): set under the shade of the island's tropical vegetation with an outdoor terrace and hammock — praised by families with toddlers for the safe enclosed garden setting and the shade from the palms. Beach Villas: direct beach access with private sundecks, Bluetooth docking stations and outdoor rain showers. Overwater Villas with Sea View: above the ocean with private sundecks, partially submerged hammocks, outdoor bathtub and outdoor shower with spectacular ocean views. Two-Bedroom Beach Villa: a duplex with the bedroom on the second level and living and dining on the ground floor. Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa (215 sqm, two levels): the premium family configuration with a private pool and open-plan living, accommodating families or groups. Children under 12 are not permitted in overwater villas for safety reasons. Overwater villa mornings on the deck are the most consistently cited daily memory by guests in this category. Tip: Families with children under 12 must book beach or garden villas — overwater accommodation is not available to guests with children under this age. The Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa is the strongest family configuration, combining space, a private pool and two levels of living area.

Question 4

How is the house reef and what marine life can guests expect?

Accepted Answer

The house reef at Kandooma is accessible for snorkelling and is producing good encounters. The reef has a 30-metre drop-off, coral gardens and cleaning stations for reef sharks. Marine life encountered includes turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and an abundance of tropical fish. Staff guide guests to specific reef spots where turtle sightings are reliable. The dive team runs the Kandooma Dive Centre to Kandooma Thila and the surrounding South Male Atoll sites for the more dramatic encounters including shark aggregations on specific excursions. A 'swim with sharks' experience at specific shark sites is a bucket-list encounter for those who participate. Tip: Ask the dive team to point out the specific reef entry point that produces the most consistent turtle encounters — staff familiarity with the reef means they can direct snorkellers to the most productive sections, and this guidance typically produces a better first-session encounter than self-directed entry.

Question 5

What dining is available and how does the all-inclusive plan work?

Accepted Answer

Three dining outlets and four bars serve the island. Kandooma Cafe is the all-day main buffet restaurant with pool and ocean views — all-inclusive buffet and set menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Asian Kitchen serves modern Asian flavours and Maldivian classics by the ocean. The Kitchen is the signature restaurant at the water's edge. Bokkuraa Coffee Club serves snacks, sandwiches and homemade ice creams. Bokkuraa Pool Bar is poolside beside the infinity pool. BAR-aveli Bar is positioned for sunset views and exotic sundowners. The Sunset Deck offers sundowners and shisha. The all-inclusive plan includes three meals at Kandooma Cafe plus lunch and dinner at Bokkuraa Coffee Club, plus selected alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Afternoon snacks and tea and coffee are also included. Christmas Eve gala (24 December) is USD 250* per adult and New Year's Eve gala (31 December) is USD 350* per adult, charged separately. Tip: Check whether The Asian Kitchen and The Kitchen signature restaurant are included under your meal plan — the AI plan primarily covers Kandooma Cafe and Bokkuraa Coffee Club, and specialty restaurant dining may carry a supplement. Confirming this at booking prevents unexpected charges at checkout.

Question 6

What is Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala?

Accepted Answer

The Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala is the resort's signature wellness facility, set in the lush garden interior of the island. COMO Shambhala is a globally recognised wellness brand known for its holistic and results-driven approach to spa and wellbeing. The spa offers a range of massages and beauty treatments in a tranquil garden sanctuary setting separate from the active beach and pool environment. Float and Flow Yoga is a specific wellness offering available at the resort. A gym is available for fitness training. The COMO Shambhala brand partnership elevates the spa quality significantly above what a Holiday Inn brand might suggest — the spa is a genuine destination-quality wellness facility. Tip: Book Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala for a mid-stay treatment day rather than treating it as an add-on — the garden sanctuary setting and the COMO Shambhala treatment quality produce the most restorative day of the stay when combined with a morning snorkel and an afternoon on the beach.

Question 7

What activities are available beyond diving and surfing?

Accepted Answer

Water: PADI 5-Star Dive Centre (Dive Free programme for certified divers, 40+ dive sites, courses for all levels), snorkelling (house reef and guided excursions), jet skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, swimming lessons, PADI Bubblemaker for children. Land: Kandoo Kids Club (ages 4-12, daily 8am-8pm, outdoor splash pool with water slides and wading pool, library, arts and crafts, gaming zone), infinity pool, gym, yoga, Float and Flow Yoga, beach volleyball, football. Excursions: dolphin watching, turtle snorkelling, local island hopping, private boat charters. A beach bonfire at the surf-side fire pit is a scheduled evening social experience. Third-party activity providers are not permitted at the resort. Tip: Book the dolphin watching and turtle snorkelling excursions on arrival day — these boat-based excursions are weather-dependent and the earlier they are scheduled in the stay, the better the chance of completion before weather or scheduling issues arise. Both are among the most-cited positive experiences by families.

Question 8

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 13 sharing a parent's room stay free. When dining with adults, children receive complimentary breakfast, lunch and dinner from the kids menu. Children under 12 are not permitted in overwater villas for safety — beach and garden villa categories are required for families with young children. The Kandoo Kids Club (ages 4-12) operates daily from 8am to 8pm with outdoor splash pool including water slides and a wading pool, a library, arts and crafts area and a gaming zone. PADI Bubblemaker is available for children. Surf camps are available for young surfers. Swimming lessons are offered. Tip: The Kandoo Kids Club open daily from 8am to 8pm — a 12-hour daily operation is longer than most Maldives kids clubs, which typically close at lunchtime or mid-afternoon. This extended schedule gives parents significantly more adult time than comparable family resorts, and the splash pool and gaming zone keep children genuinely occupied.

Question 9

How is the Wi-Fi and what practical things should guests know?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort. South Male Atoll proximity to Male generally produces reliable connectivity. Drone use is strictly prohibited on or near the resort — drones may only be used in designated areas with prior notice to reception and under resort security supervision. Third-party service providers are not permitted to operate activities or excursions on, to or from the island. All excursions must be booked through the resort. Surfers must book through Perfect Wave — no direct surfing access is accepted. Transfer costs are collected at the resort on checkout. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinner supplements apply and are charged separately. Tip: those who plan to film the resort with a drone must give prior notice to reception — the drone policy requires resort security supervision in designated areas, and attempting to fly without this arrangement risks confiscation and a negative guest experience.

Question 10

What is the best time of year to visit?

Accepted Answer

South Male Atoll follows the standard Maldives seasonal pattern. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best diving visibility. The wet season from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger winds but also favourable surf conditions at Kandooma Right. Diving conditions in South Male Atoll are productive year-round — Kandooma Thila and the surrounding sites are accessible in all seasons. The speedboat transfer with no daylight restriction operates year-round. The Dive Free programme for certified divers applies regardless of season. Tip: The wet season from May to October is the most attractive timing for surfers — the southwest monsoon produces the conditions that drive Kandooma Right, and the combination of surf conditions and the dive programme makes this period particularly rewarding for active guests.

Question 11

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Overwater Villa with its private deck, ocean views and partially submerged hammock is the most-requested honeymoon accommodation. Renewal of Vows ceremonies and private destination dining are available. The beach bonfire at the surf-side fire pit, sunset cocktails at BAR-aveli and the COMO Shambhala couple spa treatments are the most-cited romantic experiences. The IHG One Rewards points can be earned on stays, providing a loyalty benefit for honeymooners who are IHG members. The intimate island atmosphere balanced with the activity programme suits couples who want both relaxation and active engagement during a honeymoon. Tip: Book the Overwater Villa for a honeymoon and arrange the Renewal of Vows ceremony or private beach dinner through the team at booking — both experiences benefit from advance setup time and the team delivers the most personalised version of these experiences when notified before arrival rather than on the island.

Question 12

What are the main pros of staying at Holiday Inn Kandooma?

Accepted Answer

Kandooma Thila: considered among the Maldives' top 10 dive sites, directly accessible from the resort. Kandooma Right exclusive surf break via Perfect Wave: exclusive resort access to one of the South Male Atoll's best surf breaks. Kandoo Kids Club (8am to 8pm): one of the longest daily operating kids clubs in the Maldives, with outdoor splash pool with slides. Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala: a globally recognised wellness brand operating in the island's lush garden setting. Children under 13 stay and eat free from the kids menu: a genuine family cost saving. 45-minute speedboat: no seaplane, no daylight restriction. 40+ dive sites in South Male Atoll: world-class diving in one of the Maldives' most celebrated atolls. Wave energy converter experiment at Kandooma Right: a pioneering sustainability innovation in partnership with academic research. Tip: Children under 12 cannot stay in overwater villas — families with young children must book beach or garden villa categories regardless of preference. Confirming this at booking prevents a situation where the desired overwater villa is unavailable for the family group.

Question 13

How does Holiday Inn Kandooma compare to other South Male Atoll resorts?

Accepted Answer

South Male Atoll has resorts across a wide price range. Holiday Inn Kandooma is positioned as a well-priced family-friendly resort with world-class diving and an exclusive surf break, distinguished by the Dive Free programme and the Kandooma Spa by COMO Shambhala. Compared to luxury neighbours, Kandooma is more accessible in price with fewer overwater villa categories and less architectural distinction. Compared to budget properties, Kandooma has substantially stronger diving, a COMO Shambhala spa and a globally recognised brand standard. The Dive Free programme and Kandooma Thila proximity are the clearest competitive advantages over all South Male Atoll neighbours. Tip: If diving in South Male Atoll is the primary goal, the Dive Free programme combined with Kandooma Thila access makes Holiday Inn Kandooma the strongest value choice in the atoll — no other resort provides complimentary daily dives at a comparable price point.
