Question 1

How do I get from the airport to Diamonds Thudufushi?

Accepted Answer

Diamonds Thudufushi is located in South Ari Atoll, approximately 30-35 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport. The seaplane operates between 08:00 and 17:00 daily. Guests arriving outside these hours must stay overnight in Male or Hulhumale. A speedboat is also available for the transfer as an alternative. Flight details must be shared at least 48 hours before arrival. The seaplane fee is paid at checkout rather than upfront. Luggage is limited to 20 kg per person for the seaplane, with excess charged per kilogram. Tip: Confirm at booking whether the speedboat transfer alternative is available for your arrival time — the speedboat removes the 08:00-17:00 seaplane window restriction and can accommodate late-arriving international flights.

Question 2

Is the resort all-inclusive and what does it include?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Diamonds Thudufushi operates exclusively on an all-inclusive plan. The AI plan covers all meals at both restaurants, all alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including branded spirits (confirmed as genuinely comprehensive), full minibar in water villas with alcohol included, non-motorised water sports, twice-daily guided snorkelling tours on the house reef, free laundry service and free Wi-Fi. Premium drinks may carry a small surcharge. The AI plan is consistently recognised as one of the more complete offerings among Maldives all-inclusive resorts — the quality of wine and spirits is praised relative to comparable AI resorts. No room-only or half-board option exists. Tip: The twice-daily free guided snorkelling tours are one of the clearest signs of how seriously this resort takes the reef experience — most AI resorts charge for guided tours or run them infrequently. At Thudufushi, reef access is structured and daily.

Question 3

How is the house reef and what do guests consistently encounter?

Accepted Answer

The house reef at Diamonds Thudufushi is one of the defining features of the resort, consistently praised as among the best in South Ari Atoll. Marine life reported across multiple years of assessments includes: hawksbill turtles seen daily (including within 10 metres of water villa decks), blacktip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, nurse sharks visible in the evening from the jetty, napoleon fish, moray eels, eagle rays, manta rays (seasonal), bioluminescent plankton visible at night from the water villas, and schools of tropical fish in the hundreds. The sunrise side (water villas 1-9) is recommended by experienced guests for the most productive reef circuit. Coral recovery is ongoing post-2016 bleaching — assessments note improvement year on year. Tip: Follow the drift snorkel circuit recommended by experienced guests: enter at the sunrise side near water villas 1-9, follow the reef around the island, and exit at the bar for a drink before the buggy ride back to your villa — this approach produces the widest variety of marine encounters in a single session.

Question 4

Beach Bungalow or Water Villa — what do guests say about each?

Accepted Answer

Beach Bungalows and Junior Suites are on the beach with outdoor bathrooms built from coral stone, personal beachfront decks with sun loungers, full-access AI beverages and meals at the main restaurant. The outdoor bathroom design with double bowl sinks and open-air shower is frequently praised for its tropical character. The Sunset Beach Bungalows face west and are consistently recommended for evening light. Some beach villa positions have limited natural beach frontage depending on tidal conditions. Water Villas are overwater on stilts with large hardwood decks, direct lagoon access via a staircase, the overwater restaurant included in AI dining, alcohol in the minibar, iMac with movies, and immediate reef access. The Two-Bedroom Water Pool Villa adds a private infinity pool and is the only category at the resort with a pool. those who stay in both categories rate the Water Villa experience as materially superior — the combination of daily turtle encounters from the deck, reef access via the staircase and the overwater restaurant access distinguishes it significantly. Tip: Book a Sunset Water Villa if possible — west-facing overwater with daily turtle sightings from the deck, reef access via the staircase, and the overwater restaurant included in the AI plan. Honeymooners who split a stay often spend 5 nights beach-side and 5 nights overwater, calling this the best introduction to both worlds within a single trip.

Question 5

How does the dining and restaurant system work?

Accepted Answer

Two restaurants serve the island, with seating assigned by room category. Water Villa guests dine at the overwater Water Villa Restaurant, which serves a smaller menu with higher quality and more personal service. Beach Bungalow and Junior Suite guests dine at the main buffet restaurant. Water Villa guests can visit the main buffet restaurant with advance notice; Beach Bungalow guests pay a supplement to access the overwater restaurant. Both restaurants are covered under the AI plan for their respective assigned categories. Italian culinary influence is strong — Italian head chefs, authentic pasta stations, Italian-style food preparations and a European wine list are features cited by guests. JRE guest chefs (Jeunes Restaurateurs from Europe) visit the resort periodically from December 2025 for exclusive gala dinners. Tip: Water Villa guests should make at least one advance-notice visit to the main buffet restaurant during their stay — the live pasta station, barbecue grill and fresh seafood variety at lunch provide a different casual dining experience from the more curated overwater restaurant menu.

Question 6

What activities and diving are available?

Accepted Answer

Included in AI: twice-daily guided snorkelling tours, non-motorised water sports (windsurfing, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking), fitness classes, entertainment (fire show, light show, marine biology night, Maldivian-themed dinner under coconut trees). Charged: scuba diving via iDive PADI centre (consistently praised dive instructors including Mario, Marco and Alessia by name across multiple assessments), whale shark excursions (year-round in South Ari Atoll), manta ray excursions, photo sessions, big game fishing, island hopping. The resort also has games room (billiards, table football, table tennis) and a small gym. Evening entertainment is structured and active. Tip: Book a whale shark excursion for a morning midway through the stay — South Ari Atoll has year-round whale sharks at Maamigili Corner, and booking mid-stay rather than the first day allows orientation before undertaking the longer boat excursion.

Question 7

How does the resort compare to its sister property Diamonds Athuruga?

Accepted Answer

Thudufushi and Athuruga are near-identical sister properties in South Ari Atoll built by the same Italian owner (Planhotel), sharing the same white design aesthetic, all-inclusive formula and iDive dive centre. Key differences: Thudufushi is slightly larger with 71 rooms versus Athuruga's 70, and has a Junior Suite category that Athuruga lacks. Thudufushi has a small gym; Athuruga does not. Thudufushi has the speedboat as an alternative transfer; Athuruga uses seaplane only. Thudufushi has a more social, animated club atmosphere (historically attracting Italian guests and younger European couples); Athuruga has a quieter, more intimate feel. The house reefs at both are exceptional — experienced South Ari Atoll visitors rate Athuruga's reef marginally higher, while Thudufushi's social atmosphere and entertainment programme appeal to those who want more evening activity alongside the reef experience. Tip: If choosing between the two sister resorts: pick Thudufushi for a more social, fun atmosphere with a gym and more animated evenings. Pick Athuruga for slightly more seclusion, a quieter pace and marginally stronger reef reputation. Both have exceptional house reefs and the same Italian AI formula.

Question 8

What is the spa and wellness offering?

Accepted Answer

A spa is on the island offering massage treatments, Ayurvedic therapies, body treatments and facials. The spa uses organic Ayurvedic bath products, which are also provided in all villa bathrooms. A yoga pavilion operates scheduled sessions. The gym is small but functional with cardio and basic weights. A tailor service is available on the island — an unusual amenity noted as a distinctive practical feature. Spa treatments carry additional charges beyond the AI plan. Tip: Book the Ayurvedic massage for a late morning session when the island is quietest — after the morning snorkel tour returns and before the midday beach peak, the spa is most available and the natural light in the treatment rooms is at its best.

Question 9

How is the Wi-Fi and practical amenities?

Accepted Answer

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, including in water villas. Beach Bungalow guests have in-room Wi-Fi. Rooms do not have televisions — the iMac in water villas serves as an entertainment hub. The resort conducts twice-weekly island-wide chemical fumigation targeting mosquitoes — guests are notified in advance and the island is temporarily evacuated to the beach. The beach area at Thudufushi is modest — smaller than the broad beaches found at some comparable resorts, and tidal variation reduces it further during high tide. No swimming pool exists. Tip: Plan beach time around low tide windows — the beach at Thudufushi is functional rather than expansive, and tidal variation significantly affects available beach space during high tide periods. The dive centre team can advise on tide timing each morning.

Question 10

What is the child policy?

Accepted Answer

Children are welcome. Children under 15 may stay free under specific promotional packages — confirm terms at booking. Free cribs are available. No swimming pool and no dedicated kids club are available. The resort is primarily positioned for couples and honeymoon guests. Families with older children who dive or snorkel will find the South Ari Atoll marine environment outstanding. The iDive centre offers introductory scuba for children with parental consent. Tip: Families with children who are confident snorkellers aged 10 and above will find Thudufushi genuinely rewarding — the reef encounters from the water villa staircase are among the most accessible and immediately impressive in the Maldives for young marine enthusiasts.

Question 11

Is the resort suitable for honeymooners?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Diamonds Thudufushi is a strongly popular honeymoon destination with a 9.6 couple satisfaction score. The Italian-owned white villa design, sunset overwater views, daily turtle encounters and intimate island scale create a consistently romantic atmosphere. Many honeymoon split their stay between a beach bungalow for the first half and a water villa for the second — this is a widely recommended approach for a first Maldives honeymoon. Special room decoration and celebration arrangements are made with advance notice. The Two-Bedroom Water Pool Villa at the end of the jetty is the most private accommodation and the most requested honeymoon category when budget allows. Tip: Notify the resort of the honeymoon at booking and request the Sunset Water Villa — the team prepares decoration, champagne and a fruit platter on arrival, and the sunset orientation combined with the daily turtle sightings from the deck makes this the defining romantic experience at Thudufushi.

Question 12

What is the best time to visit?

Accepted Answer

South Ari Atoll has two seasons. The dry northeast monsoon from November to April provides the most reliable sunshine, calmest seas and best underwater visibility. The southwest monsoon from May to October brings occasional rain and stronger seas, but South Ari Atoll has year-round resident whale sharks — unique among Maldives atolls. Manta rays at cleaning stations are most reliable from May to November. The resort operates year-round. Christmas and New Year carry mandatory gala dinner supplements and advance booking is essential. Tip: January and February are among the best months for a first visit — dry season conditions, year-round whale sharks still present, manta ray season winding down, and rates lower than the festive peak period in December.

Question 13

What are the main pros of staying at Diamonds Thudufushi?

Accepted Answer

Outstanding house reef with daily turtle encounters: hawksbill turtles visible within metres of water villa decks, reef sharks visible from the jetty at dusk — one of the most reliable reef wildlife rosters in South Ari Atoll. Year-round whale sharks: South Ari Atoll positioning gives access to Maamigili Corner whale shark excursions in every month. Genuinely comprehensive AI plan: Italian wines and premium spirits included, twice-daily guided snorkelling tours, free laundry and free Wi-Fi — above average for the AI category. Italian design and culinary heritage: authentic Italian food including fresh pasta stations, Italian head chefs and JRE guest chef events from December 2025. Two-restaurant assignment system: Water Villa guests access the overwater restaurant with personal service; Beach Bungalow guests have the casual buffet — each category gets a matched dining experience. iDive PADI dive centre: one of the most praised dive teams in South Ari Atoll. Bioluminescent plankton at night: a visible night phenomenon from the water villa decks that many as one of their most memorable Maldives moments. Social evening entertainment: fire shows, marine biology nights and Maldivian cultural evenings on a structured weekly schedule. Tip: No swimming pool and a modest beach are the two most consistently noted limitations at Thudufushi — guests expecting a large beach or a resort pool will not find them here. The reef, the ocean and the overwater villa environment are the reasons to choose this resort.
